2022 Pedroncelli Chardonnay, F. Johnson Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Tasting Notes
The bouquet of our F. Johnson Vineyard Chardonnay shows tropical fruit and toasted oak with a touch of vanilla. Rich and layered flavors of Crème brulee and peach follow through to balanced acidity and toast notes. Barrel fermentation and malo-lactic fermentation add underlying complexity and richness. Medium-bodied, the fruit flavors blend together for a creamy, bright finish. Enjoy now or within three years of release.
Vineyard Source
The Frank Johnson Vineyard was planted to Chardonnay more than 40 years ago and a particular block is chosen for our small lot of barrel-fermented Chardonnay. Two appellations meet in this vineyard: Russian River Valley on the south side and Dry Creek Valley to the north. Influenced by the cool climate that combines marine fog layers and the confluence of two main waterways, the resulting wine shows exceptional quality.
Harvest & Winemaking Notes
Warm weather during the growing season concentrated flavors and the drought brought lower yields. The Chardonnay was harvested in the last week of August. As a result, the wine shows a high concentration of aromatics, rich varietal flavors, and mild acidity. The grapes were crushed and pressed into a temperature-controlled stainless steel tank to settle for 24 hours. The juice was inoculated with Montrachet yeast and half-way through fermentation was transferred to barrels. The wine was aged for eight months on the lees in new and seasoned American oak barrels. 100% of the barrels went through the secondary malo-lactic fermentation. Weekly stirring of the lees ensured the smoothing effects of aging the wine sur-lie, adding additional complexity.

Tasting Notes
Very aromatic! The fresh aromas of strawberry, rose petals, and spice are followed by flavors of red berries, cherry, and spice with a touch of citrus. It is nicely balanced between crisp acidity and refreshing fruit flavors. Our Rosé is made to be enjoyed upon release.
We have it down to an art when it comes to making Rosé. We have been producing Rosé made from Zinfandel for over 70 vintages. The Zinfandel grape defines our Rosé with fresh fruit flavor and a quaffable charm. Its’ crisp style, framed by berry and spice notes, sets our Rosé apart from all the others. The grapes were harvested from the critically acclaimed Bushnell Vineyard, which has been in our family and a source to the winery since the 1940s. Located on a high bench, the vineyard’s well-drained rocky soils and climate create the perfect combination for high-quality Zinfandel fruit.
Winemaking
The vintage had a good start with plenty of rain to begin the season. Cooler-than-normal temperatures slowed the vineyard growth over the spring and summer. Slow ripening to maturity allowed the grapes to showcase more aromas and flavors than previous vintages. Highly aromatic, excellent quality. Once destemmed and pressed, the 100% free run juice is transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for a slow fermentation at 58 degrees F. The fruitiness of the zinfandel grape lends rounded and balanced flavor to the wine. Bottled a few months after harvest, the wine captures the vintage’s freshness.

Tasting Notes
Intense aromatics and ‘very varietally correct’ quips our winemaker Montserrat Reece. True to the Sauvignon Blanc grape the bouquet has notes of fresh grass and peach. Citrus and tropical fruit flavors are layered with a touch of spice and honey. Refreshing and crisp. Please enjoy upon release or within a year or two as no aging is required.
Dry Creek Valley has a great pedigree developing great Sauvignon Blanc. We found this grape to be perfect for the soil, sun, and place. Like a duet, it balances the essence of the grape, bright and captivating. There are two blocks on our estate vineyard, picked a week apart, to bring the best of the varietal aspects to the wine— one with grassy notes and the other with a tropical fruit core. The resulting wine is a delicious reflection of the place.
Winemaking
The warm growing season experienced great conditions with mild summer heat and an even-handed harvest. Both the season and lower yields in the vineyard led to concentrated flavors. The estate vineyard was harvested the last week of August. The wine shows intensity of aromatics and varietal flavors with a nice balance between fruit and acidity showcasing the luscious Dry Creek Valley fruit. Once the grapes are destemmed and pressed the juice goes to stainless steel fermenting tanks to cold soak for 24/48 hours. Inoculated with selected yeast and slow fermentation at about 58F in stainless steel tanks completes the process. Keeping the temperature controlled during fermentation maintains the flavors. The wine is bottled a few months after harvest without oak aging or malolactic fermentation bringing the freshness of the vintage to the glass.

Labrat checking in! I saw the UPS notification and thought this was the Ruah I ordered but then got the email from Alice and had to double check the shipment details of the package en route. Then I saw ped in the package description along with… rose? Wow ok plot twist!
Along with most others here I’m sure, we love Pedroncelli. My partner (now wife) and I even had the chance to visit a couple years back and would go back in a heartbeat given the chance. I even excitedly cleared the shelf of their Mother Clone zin at my grocery store when they cut the price a couple weeks ago.
The bottle of 2023 Pedroncelli Zinfandel Rosé came in clear glass with an unfamiliar to us (for ped) label of nameless abstract art debarked the truck at the end of a midwest warm spring day so I cooled it for a bit until later when a few more mouths would be around to try it.
The situation could have been better as others were already sipping on some red, listening intently to an emotional story and preoccupied with comforting so they were a bit distracted with tasting when I pulled out the rat bottle. Removing the screw top and pouring, it showed a dusty rose pink color and I could smell strawberry and honey, maybe a bit of oakiness somehow.
At this point I should add that none of us are particularly fond of whites or rosés, so there is likely a bit of bias here. That said, it seemed like there was some carbonation to it as there was some bubbliness in the glass and bottle upon pouring. I didn’t see mention of sparkling on the label so I was unclear if it was intended or if there was a defect in the bottle. I tasted a bit of bite from the bubbles, and beyond that it was a delicate strawberry and floral lavender on the palate.
Comments from the others that I requested as I interrupted were that it was tangy, tart, “stings”. Later the youngest continued sipping and said it “gets better,” but it was otherwise not very well received. The bubbles did seem to fade after a while, and I did appreciate that there was a pretty dry aspect to this rosé as it presented fruity not in a sweet way. I closed it and left it to chill a couple days
I’m really hopeful for other rats on this, and thinking we just got an off bottle because I’d have to pass on this one as it is – otherwise I could see the potential for a light summer sipper. Thank you so much Alice and Pedroncelli for the chance to rat! Always an honor and appreciated.
My roommate and I had really liked their https://casemates.com/forum/topics/pedroncelli-signature-selection-dry-ros-of-zinfandel-1 back in the day. We’ve tried a few others of theirs from here, but were middling on them. So I was cautiously optimistic on this one. At least I knew it was likely to be decent, which has been hard to find with wines lately. (Especially as the PA wine stores have had some issues with corking over the past few summers, so many previously reliable brands were coming up crap)
Initial impressions- Thank goodness I live in a condo building that accepts our packages for us! Popped this into the fridge for a few hours and then tried it.
Crisp, bright but not overly acidic feeling. Tart green apple, minerality. There’s a nice roundness to it, feels full. Perfect for a hot summer day.
Saved the other half for the next night, and the flavors rounded out even more. More melony, still not sweet but like, juicy feeling almost. I think I need 2 cases of this one if it’s going to be this hot here!
Was definitely going to be an auto buy on it’s own. Now that I see it’s part of a mixed batch, I’m curious to see what the other rats say. Still likely in for at least 1, mostly debating a second since storage space is very limited right now.
Note for future me. Rose is delicious, chard tastes kinda funny. Not bad, but almost sweet somehow? Chase isn’t as much a fan as I’d hoped, but I kinda like it better than the usual chard he gets. Less oaky maybe? I’m not sure.
Pedroncelli’s F. Johnson Vineyard 2022 Chardonnay from the Dry Creek Valley
Per the label, 100% Chardonnay, 100% barrel and malo-lactic fermented, montrachet yeast
8 months in French oak, 30% New oak
Pale straw color, bright fruit, acid, and mineral on the nose, bottle temp is too cold at 44°.
At that temp the minerals are strong, and over power any fruit taste. I really get gypsum, talcum. With hints of pear. It does make me salivate and slightly pucker my cheeks.
Allowing it to warm to about 50° brought forth pineapple and peach, with still a gravely/minerality. It’s buttery, lingering on the pallet and expressing more sweet fruitiness. Apple, pineapple, and muted citrus linger pleasantly for a while.
