Spellbound wines are sourced from winegrowing regions throughout California where warm sun and cool moonlight nights result in expressive, approachable, balanced wines. These wines are true to their roots, expressing ripe varietal character with a style that elevates every occasion - from special events to everyday meals around the family table. Everyone knows the warm sun nurtures plants, bringing grapevines to full maturity. But it’s the moon, ruler of the tides, whose gravitational force helps pull water up from the soil during the cool nights that has influenced farmers since ancient times. Our food-friendly wines are true to their roots, expressing ripe varietal character and spellbinding flavors.
Spellbound Petite Sirah has an intense color and generous bouquet of rich blackberries and blueberries, vanilla bean and roasted coffee, all in a remarkably approachable glass. The wine is crafted to unleash dark and luscious characteristics, while managing tannins to deliver an opulent and juicy Petite Sirah.
Enjoy this wine on its own or with expressive dishes including Cajun flavors, smoky barbecued meats, spaghetti with meatballs, fried chicken and even Greek food. Rosemary, oregano, paprika and many more spices all work well.
The founding partners of Spellbound chose the name and label imagery to suggest the ever-present magical, mystical force of the moon.
For as long as anyone can remember, man has marked time by the movement of the moon through its phases. From full, glowing orb to gentle crescent, this spellbinding ruler of the night sky inspires everyone from poets to winemakers. There’s nothing like a glimpse of this ever-present sphere to make one pause in appreciation, wherever we are, whatever we’re doing. Moments like these inspired us to make Spellbound, wines that bring people together and reveal the beauty in the day-to-day.
Spellbound wines are sourced from throughout the winegrowing regions of California. As we craft these wines, we take inspiration from the celestial spirit of the lunar calendar, which reminds us that all life’s phases are worth remembering. These wines pair with everything from oysters on the barbecue to Wednesday night mac-n-cheese. Share them with all the people in your life - family, newfound friends, or those you’ve known for many moons.

2017 Spellbound Petite Sirah - $23 = 23.46%
This is $15 at my local TW. Gets some pretty good reviews at that price. With Covid ending, and some block parties planned, this seems like a no brainer.
But for the Alice’s super quick action to redirect the shipment, this Lab Rat report would not have happened! She was able to get the bottle to our summer location and we shared it with two friends already scheduled to come have wine on our dock Friday evening. Thanks Casemates for the opportunity!
The color of this wine really is something. It is as deep, dark, opaque purple as any wine I remember seeing. The smell is pleasant; slightly fruity with a hint of pepper. We all agreed that cherry was the dominant fruit scent.
Remarks from the first sips were that there was certainly a touch of spice, slightly nutty and solid cherry and blackberry flavors. There were acidic notes so we looked forward to trying this with some food and the wine was dry, but tannins were light. The finish was short and overall the wine is not terrible complex, but absolutely nothing objectionable about it. We tried it with some roasted cauliflower, carrots and caramelized onion hummus and everything tasted great together. The wine could definitely hold its own with most any foods.
I was particularly curious about the price that Casemates would sell this for because Spellbound wines are frequently on sale in the NH State Liquor Stores (including this month) and it was reassuring to see that Casemates soundly beat the $11.99 that the state stores charge! We will get some!
@jchasma It makes GREAT sangria. The fruitiness works very well. (I may or may not have done that with a bottle or two of mine.) And while I don’t have my notes, IIRC, the petite syrah wasn’t less jammy, per se, but there was more to balance it out.
@jchasma finally someone else who wasn’t crazy about it! There’s so much enthusiasm in that thread, and I have not been enjoying it, though I normally like Cabs
Got this yesterday and just had to give it a try. Nice aroma, cherry and something else. First taste seemed a bit sweet, but that might have been caused by what I tasted first. Turned into a very nice middle of the road PS. Tasty and no faults I can tell. Be very happy to drink or serve to any but the most picky of my wine drinking friends. Crazy value!

The Spellbound Cab from this same year punches well above its price…great QPR on that one. https://casemates.com/forum/topics/spellbound-cabernet-sauvignon
Interested to see if the rats think the same on this one!
@TimW One of the rats for the Cab had this to say:
I’m definitely in; still vacillating betwixt 6 or 12.
@TimW Didn’t vacillate for long; the incremental price of 12 over 6 is about $4/btl. I’ll allow for breakage and gifting.

@rpstrong hard to beat that case price! I mean seriously! I’m in for a case.

@cdgrimm Thank you for the report. It’s definitely hard to beat a CM price.
I really enjoyed the cab that was paired on the last offering, but you can rest assured, an excellent wine. The rats are spot on. I’m in!

@dkralston I hate the idea of celebrating memorial day. We should commemorate it. Or honor it. But celebrate? Hmmmm.
That case price for a well-reviewed wine! Holy guacamole! In for a case

If I didn’t prefer the Spell Bound cab (too jammy for me), do you think there’s a chance I’ll like this?
@jchasma at case price, you could use it to make tinto de veranos (or some wine cocktail of your choice) and not feel bad.

No more room in the garage, or I’d be getting two with this review and the price!

Anyone in NY wants to split a 12 case? I can take 6 or more. I’m in Jersey City.

@Springbank Just cracked my first bottle and agree on all accounts. Glad I pulled the trigger on this one.
Agreed. Very nice. Happy to drink and share.
