The 2018 Rosé is the perfect day drinker, transporting the mind to laying on the beach or lounging poolside. Light-bodied and crisp, it is approachable with a little complexity and a lot of fun flavor bursts. The nose shares the appealing aroma of wild strawberries, peach, and watermelon.
Easy to drink and pleasingly light and dry, flavors of pineapple and spicy pear, with floral accents of honeysuckle and orange blossom hit the palate. These bright flavors are accompanied by a delicate mouth feel and a refreshing, clean finish. The lively fruit profile paired with the beautiful acidity makes this wine a thirst-quenching delight.

I have the privilege of being a lab rat for today’s Two Old Dogs rosé offer. I got the bottle earlier this week, and let it rest in the refrigerator until I opened it just a few hours ago. Let’s check it out! And this time, I even remembered to grab one of the spiffy Casemates glasses.
Not a lot of detail on the label, here.
This is a pretty light pale pink wine, closed with a screwcap. Not a lot of detail on the labels here. Opening and pouring a glass, the first thing I notice is the nose… or lack thereof. This one just is not very aromatic, even as it warms up. There’s a hint of fruit, maybe barely a floral note in there. I have to looking for it, but there is something.
In the mouth it’s very light bodied, with a little more bright fruit than what I picked up in the aroma. Maybe hint of citrus in there? Maybe some strawberries? Well, I’m not the best guy to pick out specific flavor notes, but I’ll be curious to see how this compares to the official notes (turns out it’s “pineapple and spicy pear, with floral accents of honeysuckle and orange blossom…” well, OK).
This is quite nice & refreshing chilled, and I’d say the fruit in the flavor may pop a little more when it’s cold, than as it warms up. It does make a pretty good pairing with my salad.
Overall I think this is a fairly executed Provençal style rosé. But this is not quite my preferred style. When I go for rosé, I gravitate towards those with more body, and more fruit; Tavel wines are usually great. I enjoyed the Mulderbosch that was up here recently. So I think I’m going to sit this offer out, personally. But this may make a good choice for an easy-drinking refreshing chiller.
One last note: I did not take a close look at the label before I poured the first glass. After tasting it, I was surprised when I noticed this was 2018 vintage. I’ve had a couple very light style like this where the aroma & flavor disappear after a couple years. And reading my notes again, maybe that’s happened here… but I thought I was drinking a younger wine, just very light in the nose & flavor. Without a more recent vintage to compare to, I guess I cannot be sure if that’s the deliberate style, or if it’s fleeting with age.
@rjquillin Not quite. I did wonder if it was a Grenache rosé, but wasn’t at all sure. I’d have expected a bit more character to the fruit… but being a blend, it’s not necessarily going to be characteristic anyway. I certainly would not have guessed at Pinot Noir being in the blend.
@rjquillin I also did check out the tech sheet for the 2021 before the offer went up… but it turns out that mentions a somewhat different mix of Syrah, Grenache and Mouvèdre.
I received notice of a package requiring adult signature scheduled to be delivered later in the day on 6/5. We were originally scheduled to fly out earlier that same day, but we had a teen in the hospital with Rhabdomyolysis since Saturday, so we ended up having to postpone our trip to NYC until the 8th to make sure he was well enough to travel. I guess the silver lining is that I was home to sign for it instead of on a plane! This definitely won’t be as thourough as I’d like given the circumstances. It’s been a bit chaotic this week…
This was my first experience tasting a Rose, so I don’t have much to compare to, but here it goes…
PNP - Color is a clear, pale copper/salmon. The aroma was moderate intensity, but I was unable to detect any distinctive notes. Upon tasting, it was dry, light-medium bodied, with a crisp, healthy level of acidity. I detected notes of grapefruit/citrus, but not much else. I had the wife taste this with me, but she was a bit distracted and only mentioned that it was enjoyable.
It paired nicely with some pan fried chicken breast with a white wine shitake mushroom cream sauce (heavy cream, white wine, garlic, soy sauce, sriracha), rosemary and garlic oven roasted potatoes, and green beans and red peppers stir fried with soy sauce and sesame oil.
For the first time tasting a Rose, it was a surprisingly good experience. This one reminded me of a Sauvignon Blanc. I can definitely see people enjoying this during a hot summer day. It was very refreshing, and the 12.5% ABV made this extremely easy and pleasant to drink! The wife and I both share a general disdain for sweet wines, so this was naturally a perfect fit for us. I’d definitely recommend grabbing a case, especially at this price point!
@worbx Thanks! He was finally discharged last night after being there since Saturday. He’s doing much better now, just took a lot of fluids and sleepless nights.
We recently took legal guardianship of him a little over a month ago. He was one of my wife’s students that had basically been given up on by his adopted parents and on the verge of being sent to an orphanage of sorts… Although the situation was unfortunate, I think it was an opportunity for him to see how many people (who had barely just met him) truly care about him and were rooting for him from both of our families.
