@ScottW58 Drinking really well. A glass left for yesterday was doing just fine. I’ve maybe a case or so of this era and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how they are holding up. Had to cheat and look but this was only the 2nd bottling for Horseshoe, planted '04
On Monday we had our last bottle of 2007 Pennyfarthing Barbera. This was better than the previous bottle somehow, with the butterscotch notes being more of an accent than a primary driver like in some of the previous bottles. Nicely done by @winesmith
@klezman
I still have 1 or 2 left. IIRC, you guys chipped in on a full pallet. I felt lucky to be cut in for a case and WD was going to ship them for free. Unfortunately Ron took my case from WCC with his, then charged me the full tariff to ship them to me. Still happy to have them but I think I paid more for the shipping than the wine!
@chipgreen@klezman
Yeah, that whole thing was a mess. As i recall, the one you got from me was actually allocated elsewhere, but Clark asked for it back to fill your request.
@klezman@rjquillin
Yes, 2014 RPM tour. Never heard about the wine being reallocated, thought you guys were carving a case out for me from the pallet. Either way, glad to have gotten it.
@ScottW58 one of Clark’s crazy experiments I think. Very long age on it and that’s how it manifested. I preferred the last bottle that has less of that note to it.
Short ribs and 2016 Red Car Cabernet, Mohrhart Ridge Vineyard. Yes, that one. Red Car gets their grapes more and charges more than twice what Peter did. But it’s damn good.
@klezman Asparagus, fresh tomato, arugula, Boursin, pork tenderloin. We can eat asparagus everyday in season. When we were Illinois way had fields we could pick wild. Down in SC where we’re at, too hot, no asparagus. So have to drive to Wisconsin. Not exactly international travel but it’s the little things…ha!
@chefjess@ScottW58 Vino was outstanding, but I was a little worried. That shadow on the bottom of the bottle is the cork…in the bottle. Looking for a nice bottle for bride’s BD I was surprised to see this was mid to high shoulder, so decided on this with another for backup. Top of cork some mold, wiped clean, but the cork I couldn’t get, just too soft. It didn’t crumble at all, just fell gently into bottle.
Party? Sure! No 2000’s in the stash!
Last night grilled up come Costco NY Strips for our guests, served along with grilled onions, baked potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, green stuff. Pulled out a 2019 enTycement.
Well since we will be on the beautiful coast of Oregon for fathers day visiting @danandlisa for fathers day the kids/husbands took us and my sister’s out for dinner, never thought I would see the day !? so I brought a couple of mags. Good Lord that cha. Pagne was rocking!
@rjquillin@ScottW58 you might be able to see the diam 30 mark through the glass. The label just says Willamette Valley, no vineyard designate on the label. There was also a hummingbird stamp in the corner of the label.
Brother visiting from the left coast. Last night 2020 Walter Scott Bois Moi with black cod (not pictured). Amazing wine. Tonight, 2016 Iron Horse CVB with sushi. What will tomorrow bring?
@chipgreen local store a mile or so from work;
San Diego Wine and Beer
I’ve liked earlier vintages more this one on P&P. Giving it a few days in the fridge to see where it goes.
2012 Wilson Estate “Sydney” PS. Wow!
So, many years ago, I was at a grocery store in Santa Rosa. I was looking for a wine to drink, and a clerk suggested a Wilson Zin…It was fantastic!
So, I’ve been in their club, and have since been allowed to buy cases at club prices (wink wink, don’t tell anybody). I’ve always been thrilled with their wines.
So, @WineDavid, Wilson is in your neighborhood…gotta get them on-board!
@FritzCat@InFrom@Winedavid49 Wilson would be a fun one. I recall back in the day walking into the winery when Wilson was just Wilson. Ken sitting on the chair behind the counter with a little wine buzz going and lots of wine stacked for half off to move them.
@FritzCat@InFrom@kaolis@Winedavid49 I got a mixed case from Wilson a few years back. Fantastic wine. After the first sip my neighbor said “Everyone should make wine like this “. They were all fantastic.
@InFrom@klezman@ScottW58 Locked and loaded for sure! To think I’ve been eating appys and pounding cheap Italian whites al fresco in a little midwest warmth
Well we made it yesterday, stopped at Kelley Fox wines for a taste and she sent me home with the 8 mostly full bottles we tasted woof I hope Andrea Scott dan and Lisa are ready we have some work to do tonight
@davirom
We stayed at the Omni-Parker House in Boston once. Very cool hotel. They not only created the rolls there but also Boston cream pie. Useless factoid of the day.
The tri-tip looks delicious. Must be a West Coast thing? I never see that cut here in OH.
@chipgreen@CorTot@davirom it’s not that surprising. Tri tip isn’t much of a thing in the eastern parts of the country. I’d never heard of it before living in California.
@hscottk@kaolis decant was for sediment and that the bottom corner of the cork broke off when I opened it.
Wine was great. Fully mature like an old Bordeaux, but different because it’s mostly Zin.
@hscottk@kaolis@klezman I’d agree decant just for sediment.
Back in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, Ravenswood made some absolutely spectacular Zinfandel from that Old Hill Vinyard. Been a long time since I’ve had one….
It really is a pity that very few people, even serious oenophiles, ever drink Zinfandel with more than a decade or so of age on it. The best Zinfandel I have ever had was a bottle of 1970 Simi, low shoulder fill(!!), opened in November 2020.
@hscottk@kaolis@rpm if you’re going to be in my neck of the woods I’d be happy to open up another Old Hill to share. I think I’ve got 2 more from the early 90s and a couple from the early 00s.
@chipgreen@rjquillin 400 was first of a sixer. The remaining shall rest quietly for awhile, Day one, showing its abv of 15.5 (the offer had this at 14.5) seemed a bit disjointed all in all. Day two seemed a bit bettter, day three there really wasn’t enough left to warrant saving it. My concern is alcohol doesn’t necessarily resolve itself in wine like oak does. Hot wines have a tendency to stay, well, hot. My humble. We shall see down the road.
@InFrom
I think I prefer the Handal-Denier, but there were a lot of distractions at dinner tonight (5 adults, two young kids running around, and two dogs that had just met and weren’t quite sure how they felt about each other). So I’ll try to revisit both wines tomorrow for a more thoughtful comparison.
@InFrom@kawichris650@rpm I’ve enjoyed the cooler climate herbal notes and more earth from Mohrhart, although both are excellent from Peter. This makes me want to do a side by side of all 3 single vineyard cabs.
One of the last of the 750s of this (still several mags) unique wine: the only California Merlot I have ever bought in quantity (3 cases - 2 in mags, 1 in 750ml) my older Daughter’s birth year, bought when it was released to have for her Wedding…unfortunately, her wedding was in New Mexico, which did not allow any wines other than those bought through NM distributors….
The wine was absolutely lovely…a bit past peak in 750ml, but still has some characteristic fruit, wonder bottle age aromas, including hints of rose petals, perfect balance, rich middle palate, and a long finish. Good color, some bricking consistent with age. Bottle was low neck fill.
@jmdavidson1 well, I was just about 40 when it was released and I bought it….
The old British formula was that as a young adult, you drank wines your grandfather bought, and those your father bought as a young man, in middle age you drank the grand cru your grandfather bought in his later years, and wines your father bought, as you got older you drank the grand cru your father bought…and you bought for your progeny on the same plan.
@karenhynes Thanks. Good to know since i picked up 3. I.miss the wootoffs where we could pickup old offers, when there were leftovers. None here, however.
@kaolis I buy to much stuff from Mala Market and this is their recipe, more or less. Sichuan roasted rapeseed oil infused with aromatics then poured in three phases onto the chili flakes. I use their pre ground Sichuan chili pepper mix and their Sichuan peppercorns.
@jmdavidson1 Friday is usually two bottle night. I think I skipped posting a couple of weeks. I might need to figure those out and post the missing weekends.
@klezman
We just signed up for a “Niagara Wine Dinner” at a local restaurant. The owners are originally from Canada and they curated the wines themselves from the Niagara region. Can’t wait!
Ok, last night, nothing fancy, a wine I kind of forgot about, at a Smoky Mountain motor lodge in NC. Fired up a flank steak in the fire pit by the creek…more Harleys than cars, and if you take a good look at the trailer being towed by one, you’re never to old to be a biker
@kaolis As an aside, one of my college math professors once started talking with some of us about “triple homonyms”. Ever since then I have found them interesting, and even felt particular satisfaction when I came upon a two-syllable triple (wholly, holy, holey), and a quintuple (air, e’re, ere, err, heir). This was all before you could find anything on the internet.
@klezman@scottw58 They are out of a few things now but still plenty to choose from. $150 is minimum order but I’ve always received free shipping at that amount. Also coupon code UPGRADEDREVIEWS is good for $20 off right now and the free ship still applies if the coupon takes you below $150. At least for me. That was my first go at the tenderloin, really good.
Yes, maters! I’d say fried green but actually I prefer them just a tad pink, still firm but a little tastier my humble. Seasoned flour, egg, panko.
@rjquillin
Wow, an almost mythical T Bar T sighting!
Never had the pleasure but I do have my share of labels that look just like that thanks to wine racks that don’t play well with fatties.
Another non-burger…Flannery Adventurous
@kaolis
How in the world do you keep those so non-juicy?
@kaolis Nice tomatoes
.
Two Jakes 2011 Merlot.
Tastes Old-World to me, and young for a 13 year-old wine.
The 2012 CS is on-deck.
About to open a 2014 Once & Future Pallets Vineyard Petite Sirah to go with smoky beef ribs.
Rich blend here.
Note to self; limit to three patties only.
@rjquillin how’s the wine? I think you have some of those for me.
Downeast Peach Mango Cider (it’s cider, gose, sour, whites, rose season….)
@kaolis
don’t think I have had the 8 horseshoe but had the 10, how is it drinking?
Oh man love this!

@klezman @rjquillin
Yes, 2014 RPM tour. Never heard about the wine being reallocated, thought you guys were carving a case out for me from the pallet. Either way, glad to have gotten it.
@klezman
Interesting I have had my fair share of Barbera but I don’t ever remember butterscotch flavors?
@chipgreen @klezman @rjquillin Ahhhh, RPM tours. I guess those days (tours) are over.
@jmdavidson1 @klezman @rjquillin
Would probably take a small miracle…
@chipgreen @rjquillin I only had 4 bottles, maybe 6. Ron should get the raised eyebrow there
@ScottW58 one of Clark’s crazy experiments I think. Very long age on it and that’s how it manifested. I preferred the last bottle that has less of that note to it.
Just a simple slab of burger and God I love baked potatoes! Wine is fantastic too!

@ScottW58
I love all the potatoes
Short ribs and 2016 Red Car Cabernet, Mohrhart Ridge Vineyard. Yes, that one. Red Car gets their grapes more and charges more than twice what Peter did. But it’s damn good.
@kaolis asparagus and cheese stuffed pork loin?
@klezman Asparagus, fresh tomato, arugula, Boursin, pork tenderloin. We can eat asparagus everyday in season. When we were Illinois way had fields we could pick wild. Down in SC where we’re at, too hot, no asparagus. So have to drive to Wisconsin. Not exactly international travel but it’s the little things…ha!
@kaolis Yum.
I may try growing asparagus again in my garden…we’ll see.
@davirom
Hmm that reminds me I need to make Salsbury steak again!
@davirom
Love it! Now you just need one of these bad boys

@chipgreen @davirom memories for sure!
Taco Thursday
@kaolis
No taco pics? Love that label.
@kaolis
We are beating those things to death
@ScottW58 Yeah well…
Two Jakes Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012.
Night 2. Very good. It has everything; lots of fruit,
tartness of grapefruit juice long finish.
It’s all about the asparagi, purple version current pick. Local lamb and stuff…
@kaolis More drooling over here
@kaolis
Nice. How was that ‘83?
@chefjess @kaolis
Damn! You bring an 83 I will bring a 2000 and let’s party
@chefjess @ScottW58 Vino was outstanding, but I was a little worried. That shadow on the bottom of the bottle is the cork…in the bottle. @ScottW58 brilliant! Enjoy Oregon!
@klezman @ScottW58 yumster! enjoy
@chipgreen
how was the wine?
“And why am I mister pink” what a great line from a great movie! If you’re into that kind of thing
@ScottW58
Very nice. Crisp with light red berry notes and good acidity.
2013 Goodfellow Whistling Ridge Pinot Noir, the experimental one under diam 30. Good stuff. Right into the decanter with it based on others’ reports.
@klezman how does one know if it’s the ‘experimental one’?
Were there multiple nearly identical bottlings, or just this one?
@klezman @rjquillin
A different diam cork.
@klezman @ScottW58
No way to know until it’s uncorked?
Random corkage used?
@rjquillin @ScottW58 you might be able to see the diam 30 mark through the glass.
@davirom I’ve been providing a case of that (bottle-by-bottle) to my wife for a few months.
@Mark_L Is she going through withdrawal or are you tormenting her?
My first try at Coq au vin, came out really nice I’m happy to say. Wine was okay I think Rudy might have been in a rush when applying the label

@ScottW58 looks great!
@ScottW58
Yea, I heard he’s back. Must still be shaking off the rust.

Nice and light on the Turley scale. Even with 15.3% alcohol.

@InFrom @Winedavid49 Yes!

fantastic neck and shoulder!
Well not tonight but the bags are packed and ready to go!
@ScottW58 Wait! There’s one empty spot!!
When will you be arriving?
@Mark_L

@InFrom @ScottW58 nice selections! Enjoy Oregon!
@InFrom @klezman @ScottW58 Locked and loaded for sure! To think I’ve been eating appys and pounding cheap Italian whites al fresco in a little midwest warmth
@jmdavidson1 And the winner was…
What vintage on the Aprile?
@rjquillin 2017. We liked both, which were very different. The pasta ingredients affected the pairings.
2016 Harrington Mourvèdre, Kumu Saw Vineyard, el Dorado county.
Well we made it yesterday, stopped at Kelley Fox wines for a taste and she sent me home with the 8 mostly full bottles we tasted woof I hope Andrea Scott dan and Lisa are ready we have some work to do tonight

@ScottW58 hard work. I feel bad for you!
@klezman @ScottW58 Not easy having fun!
@klezman @ScottW58 Poor, poor baby!
2011 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zin, with
@chipgreen that one supposedly (CT) expired in 2016; likely it’s doing pretty well around now.
@rjquillin
Very well
@chipgreen @rjquillin I use a CT drinking window to identify the earliest time I might want to drink it rather than the end of the window.
@rjquillin those are so good
The meal was grilled tri-tip, homemade Parker house rolls, and sautéed zucchini with herbs de Provence.

@davirom
We stayed at the Omni-Parker House in Boston once. Very cool hotel. They not only created the rolls there but also Boston cream pie. Useless factoid of the day.
The tri-tip looks delicious. Must be a West Coast thing? I never see that cut here in OH.
@chipgreen @davirom look for bottom sirloin…
@chipgreen Love Boston cream pie
@chipgreen @davirom Even at Costco? Its been a mainstay at our local Costco’s for decades.
@chipgreen @CorTot Thats where I got it.
@chipgreen
Definitely not exclusively a west coast thing. I’ve seen them here in MN. I’ll have to look for them the next time I’m at Costco.
@chipgreen @CorTot @davirom it’s not that surprising. Tri tip isn’t much of a thing in the eastern parts of the country. I’d never heard of it before living in California.
@CorTot @davirom @klezman
I will check my Costco…
@chipgreen I got a July 4 promo from Morgan Ranch today and they sell tri tip as roasts and steaks. I haven’t tried theirs, but hey, it’s an option.
@chipgreen @davirom can you forward me that email? I never seem to get any of their promos.
Looking forward to this!
@klezman How was it? And how long do you decant a 33 year old zin? Or was it just for sediment?
@hscottk @klezman and?
@hscottk @kaolis decant was for sediment and that the bottom corner of the cork broke off when I opened it.
Wine was great. Fully mature like an old Bordeaux, but different because it’s mostly Zin.
@hscottk @kaolis @klezman I’d agree decant just for sediment.

Presentation skills? nope! Flannery filet tail
@kaolis
That’s presenting quite nicely actually; missed out on the 400. Living up to expectations?
@kaolis @rjquillin
Agree. The mix of colors works for me.
@chipgreen @rjquillin 400 was first of a sixer. The remaining shall rest quietly for awhile, Day one, showing its abv of 15.5 (the offer had this at 14.5) seemed a bit disjointed all in all. @kawichris650 Survey says?
@InFrom
@kawichris650 I always loved those H-Ds.
@InFrom @kawichris650 - I have always preferred Peter’s Handal-Denier Zins to the Morhardt Ridge.
@InFrom @kawichris650 @rpm I’ve enjoyed the cooler climate herbal notes and more earth from Mohrhart, although both are excellent from Peter. This makes me want to do a side by side of all 3 single vineyard cabs.
@InFrom @kawichris650 @rpm
Does that carry over to the CS as well?
With a nod to CorTot…
@chipgreen Production values lack a certain je ne sais quoi compared to the methode traditionnelle, but I can see the appeal.
@chipgreen @InFrom its my lazy version…
We’ll drink the mags next year for her Birthday….
Patience rewarded.
@rpm How awesome that it was still drinkable. 40 years isn’t patience, it’s a lifetime. At my age now, 10 years (+) is restraint enough. Cheers!
FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!
@jmdavidson1 @rpm man I remember those, great wines that era.
@karenhynes Is that duck under the green stuff?
@davirom
Pork chop with roasted taters tossed in some Dijon, caper, herby goop.
@karenhynes Looks yummy. How’s that p n blanc drinking?
@jmdavidson1 Really good! I think (hope) I have a few more bottles of this stashed away. Would definitely buy again if it were to reappear!

And yes, that’s a fresh batch of homemade chili oil in the background.
@klezman nice all of the way around! What’s your oil recipe?

@chipgreen Ditto to that.
Well another great trip to the Oregon coast thanks to the generosity and cooking skills of @danandlisa
We did well hiked 3 to 5 miles a day and drank 3 to 5 bottles a day, perfect balance

@ScottW58 well done! Some great wines in those photos, too!
@klezman @ScottW58 @danandlisa Late to the game here…well done all!

Welcome back to SoCal.
What is it?
Watermelon?
@rjquillin
Yes with olive oil, lime juice, mint and smoked paprika.
About to see Jon Batiste at Tanglewood. Summer’s officially here. With curried chicken wraps, and green stuff that’s red.
@InFrom That is such a beautiful venue, at least it was back in the mid 80’s when I worked some shows there.
@rjquillin It hasn’t changed much over the years. Still beautiful.

Oh hell yeah, talk to me about that fried thing (tomato)?
@kaolis I need to just bite the bullet and get some of that stuff to try! Need freezer space…
@klezman @scottw58 They are out of a few things now but still plenty to choose from.
@rjquillin that’s what we should have opened last night! How is it?
@klezman Yes, we should have.
Just a single small glass, no decant, little air. Outstanding first impression.
@rjquillin
Wow, an almost mythical T Bar T sighting!
Never had the pleasure but I do have my share of labels that look just like that thanks to wine racks that don’t play well with fatties.
Brisket, a 3L of bubbles, and a bunch of other stuff at a surprise party for a relative’s 50th birthday.

@kawichris650 Brisket looks awesome! And Shootys to boot, never heard of them before. Kind of a sidecar for the bubbles
@kawichris650
Yup nice work on the brisket!
Last night sisters came over so threw another Coq au vin together with some champagne and a mag of Pinot to get through the heat.
