Tasting group last night. The side by sides of the Oregon whites were interesting. Subtle nuances, tasted over several hours to track development. The favorite at the beginning was not the favorite a few hours later. Great time was had by all.
Another very young Bordeaux, but wanted to try one early. This was opened Wed, one glass poured, and the bottle left in the fridge until Sat evening due to unforeseen circumstances. Was just beautiful on Sat. 2019 Bordeaux is fantastic from what I have tried thus far. I may quit while I’m ahead and let them rest and age, but it’s going to be hard to not keep popping these 19s.
Had a lovely dinner last night at Osteria il Sostegno in Rome, very reasonable too I might have dug into the braised oxtail dish before the pic and missed a couple others, I was hungry ha
2016 Winesmith Cab Franc. Recent Casemates purchase.
Plan to drink over 3 evenings.
Day 1 Pop-N-Pour: Very good and Interesting.
Glad I’ve got a case+ (4 from a mixed case) and some Two Jakes Cab Franc that I haven’t tried. I’m set.
@FritzCat Night 3 (for science) with beef ribs smoked for 6 hrs, then another 5 covered for good measure, all at 225 F.
Mr. Smith certainly knows WTF he’s doing!
@ScottW58 Thank you.
Tonight leftovers heated up in the oven with 2016 Masi Amarone. And, baby red potatoes done in the air fryer with Polish spices, which my daughter gets for us in Ottawa…our local ones are sub-standard. The Masi can be purchased at duty-free for $35 US. So I do…often.
@hscottk@klezman short story long is I grab Pinot first. Going to go back, ahem, a few years and a buddy with deeper pockets than mine considering I have no pockets, was a Burgundy nut with ribs. Can’t tell you how many racks of ribs and bottles of Leroy we did. Those days long gone. Expensive then but not stupid expensive like now. So I tend to lean PN, particularly if not oversauced.
As far the KB, not a buyer since this vintage, a handful left, but they are a little tamer with a few years.
@klezman took a peek at the website, looks like a yummy chunk of protein
Ravenswood holding? Good not great vintage, speaking in very general terms, if I recall.
@kaolis Every bottle of old Ravenswood I’ve had has been somewhere between good to excellent. This one was closer to excellent - fully mature, not losing anything.
@bunnymasseuse@klezman
Very good, one of our favorite Roses. We got lucky when we last visited they were clearing out the '21s to make room for '22s, so we got a deal on a case. Blend for this vintage is 72% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Syrah.
@rjquillin
I feel like many of us hoard certain bottles of wine because we appreciate and treasure not only the wine, but the winemaker’s efforts as well.
However, based on various winemaker’s comments I’ve seen over the years, many of them would prefer for us to do exactly as you’re doing. Drink and enjoy the wine, just because…
I think I have a bottle of that, and a ‘12 maybe? … but for no reason at all if I bought even a case of Wellington I’d be surprised… now those MR strips are a fave
2013 Roche Winery Merlot Reserve Carneros
Picked up some Truffle Tremor at Eataly yesterday, on sale for what ended up being a not-insane price. So that’s what’s for dinner.
Soooo…not too exciting (and a few ipa’s for lunch) but my Dad bought this grill in 1955, a few months before I was born, at the local A&P grocery store. Still has original motor, rib basket etc. Had a little trouble trussing and securing today’s chicken, perhaps because of those ipa’s?
@rjquillin Fruit forward, not very complex, but we thought it was tasty. A little hot at first but smooth after about 2 hours. Maybe decant? Reviews said drink now but I suspect its got a few more years.
@rjquillin If you have these, drink-up; imo.
While it was still interesting and not compromised, it clearly had gotten too buried for too long.
Back to the Victory I’ve been nursing along…
@klezman yeah, for my dads birthday, honestly this last concert of the summer is the way to go, it may still be very hot but the sun goes down earlier and you they start playing earlier but still end at 10pm.
@hscottk On my grill, per Morgan Ranch suggestion - place on hot grill make grill marks then place on upper rack, turn 3 or 4 times - about 5 minutes total each side. Pull at internal temp of 120 rest 5 to 7 minutes. It worked
Went to a dinner last night with a couple friends and some people visiting on business from New York. A good time was had! Now I have to tee off ugh I’m tired.
Decided to pop something young - Bedrock 2021 Old Vine Zinfandel. It’s surprisingly enjoyable for my palate this young. Plenty of fruit but not overwhelmingly so.
An excellent pairing with Flannery hangers. Wine showed very well. Previous bottle in June seemed slightly oxidized. This was in a great place with cassis and tobacco and just enough dark fruit to keep it interesting.
Last night and thanks to @jmdavidson1 for the recipe, simple but so good! And toasted up an Italian bread with olive oil and some delicious Corbara tomatoes on top. Could not decide on the wine again so a little of both
@davirom@InFrom
Hmmm looks like another trip to NYC needs to be booked oh and thanks for the link to the traditional foods and meat eaters of Marche, we found them and ate them all! fried meat stuffed olives/fried cream/fried artichokes etc.
@karenhynes@kawichris650@rjquillin
Yes, seasoned/breaded/fried potato wedges. Growing up a half hour North in the Cleveland area I never heard of them until I moved to Akron. I think they got popular here via WV. There were a lot of people that moved from WV to work for Goodyear and Firestone back in the heyday of Akron being the “Rubber City”.
2009 Domaine Laleure-Piot Corton-Rognet
2008 Dr. Hermann Erdener Herrenberg Riesling Eiswein #16
With roasted chicken, a kabocha squash soup, some green things, round raisin challah (homemade, of course), and honey cake (and maybe apples and honey) for the first night of Rosh Hashannah.
Shana tova to all who celebrate!
@rjquillin@ScottW58 Was a tough day but we made it. Someone else who participates on this playground is a Central Waters fan, they do some real tasty stuff. Kirwan is in a real good spot, holding onto to some nice fruit, in a better place than an '00 Grand-Pontet last week and the meatloaf was simple but a winner. I’ve made a million of 'em and a million different renditions so sometimes ya never know.
@chipgreen Great minds and all that. I just put a 2013 Iron Horse Vineyards Chardonnay Estate into the freezer. Making a homegrown San Marzano tomato sauce tonight.
The last of the good sweet corn of the season… I think? Made some fritters and sausage, can’t wait to put a poached egg and hot sauce on one tomorrow morning.
@klezman Had to taste, day2.
Yesterday it was very good, but a little more zippy than I expected. Now it’s calmed down a little and is delicious.
I’ve got lots of PS. When and what do you expect in the dumb phase?
@FritzCat Good to hear it!
A wine in a dumb phase just tastes closed down and “less”. @ScottW58 I’ll take an expert winemaker’s thoughts for what they’re worth. He’s not the only one I’ve heard that from. But it’s certainly true that not all (or maybe even most) PS goes through such a phase. But that’s why I ask - to get a better sense of how often this actually happens.
@klezman@ScottW58 So, according to this theory, when should PS be drunk? When I moved, about 8 years ago, I stuck a few cases of PS and Amarone in a corner…“out of sight, out of mind.”
@kaolis@ScottW58
Ahh, you forget the wonderfulness and superiority of Ar backfilling!
When the contents reach the sweet spot, fill.
Good for however long you want at that point.
After all of @kaolis talk I found one of these and had to try it, I think 12 was the last Kutch I had and damn this was good! Needed some air to really come around. With random leftovers
@rjquillin@ScottW58 '15 was good to Mr. Kutch. In fact the '15 regular Sonoma Coast bottles are quite tasty today. Side note you mention '12, another fine vintage for Jaime, his Sonoma Coast bottling strong again. McDougall always a fave.
molarchae asked for bubbly, so I just put this in the fridge: NV Edouard Brun & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Brut Réserve
Will probably make Sichuan noodles
@chipgreen@klezman@rjquillin while I do hope those that got screwed eventually get something I would never purchase from a company owned by Shaw again. Lots of problems with not a lot of upside. UC was very gimmicky.
@rjquillin
There was an email sent on September 12th, with a correction email on the 13th. They went right into my spam folder in gmail. Thankfully I caught that article which made me check my spam. You might want to check yours as well.
@rjquillin
Sure, can you whisper your email address to me? My old operamail account closed down and I failed to save my contacts in time. That goes for anyone else who feels they might be affected and can’t find the emails. FYI, they were from Ashby & Geddes. Sent September 12th & 13th.
This was weirdly unexpected. 2019 Winesmith Grenache Bates Ranch. We weren’t going to drink this tonight, but I was putting away some TO bottles from a recent offer into wine fridge and saw that the entire bottle (label, glass, and capsule) had mold. The adjacent bottle of the same wine is also moldy, but no other bottles. So we cleaned up the bottle to decant it and the cork disintegrated! A 2019 wine! Shoulda bought a Durand! On PnP the wine seems fine.
@davirom
I would think the mold is from your wine cooler not the bottles. I had the same thing happen in one of my coolers and bought a little disposable de humidifier problem solved. Cheap corks happen. Oh and yeah Durand
@ScottW58 I tend to agree, but I don’t understand why the Winesmith’s were targeted. I am interested in the disposable dehumidifier if you can provide more details or a link. I already have a tray of baking soda at the bottom on general principles.
@chipgreen 100% agreed. Still elegant and delicious.
CT says I have had 10 of these over the years. I was hoarding that last one for the right meal, and last night was it. Great pairing, we were still talking about it this morning.
Some of my Wellingtons of that era are showing their age, probably due in part to my lack of temp-controlled storage (and maybe those extra-crumbly corks get some of the blame), but this WS PN has stood up well.
@InFrom
I still have some bottles left. I liked this one so much, it was the wine I brought to share at the WW 10 year anniversary celebration in VA. I will make sure to save one for the Casemates 10 year anniversary in 2028. See you there!
Saw this recipe on the Internet today and knew I had to make them Gougeres cheese puffs. Eating with one of my favorite champagnes while the Campo Grande pork loin roasts. @chipgreen getting rid of this old wine so I can drink the fresh stuff!
With a Flannery burger trying out one of these on its release day, I backed out at the last minute and am proud of myself, sadly it’s a fantastic bottle!
@kaolis@ScottW58
I bought on Tuesday. I’ve been buying Beta for a while. One of a few last remaining lists that I have not dropped. Guaranteed allocations for 24 hours until the release yesterday, except the mags. Those were first come. The Jasud release is in a few weeks. I think those will be gone in a flash. Small production so my guess is 1 bottle/person.
@chefjess@kaolis
It was the 17, picked up 2 bottles from winebid a while ago to try. I saw the email when it first came in loaded up the four bottles I was offered put my card and info in then backed out, I’m just too old to buy young cabs and Bordeaux anymore. Proud of myself but I gotta say I’m FOMO. If you young people can get them do it. Pretty a w e s o m e wine
2019 Meadowcroft Zinfandel, Speedy Creek Vineyard, Knights Valley, Sonoma County - with roated brussel sprout salad topped with a fried egg. Wine was very good - nice fruit but not jammy.
@ctmariner Pulled the trigger on those, they were supposed to deliver in another 10 days or so but they shipped last week while I was 1200 miles away. Anyway figured it out and I have them, think I’ll pop one this weekend.
Cooking a NY Strip (kind of a delayed 45th anniversary dinner) from a recent Costco purchase and pulled out a 2013 Two Jakes Cabernet Sauvignon. With green stuff, Henrici’s Famous Mushrooms (from an online recipe – long time Chicago-area natives will recognize), grilled onions, and whatever.
Tasty little wine, and that patty no Iberico and Wagyu blend, that’s 73/27 beef straight from Food Lion. And topped with a fancy mix of Kraft American slice and 18yo cheddar.
@ScottW58 It’s quite good. I’m an Armagnac fan, drink very little and even less these days. It’s not quite as spicy as a comparison (to what I drink) and maybe a little fuller in body. Clocks in at 90, it likes a drop or two of water to bring it around.
@rjquillin I’ve a small collection of paraphernalia, much of it tucked away in boxes unfortunately. I have to be able to look at a bit of it though right?
@kaolis@ScottW58
I’ve got an unopened 1979 Armagnac Castarède Bas Armagnac tucked away. Have to keep it in mind should that be of interest and we ever have a mutual opportunity to make use of it…
@jmdavidson1 Turns out “sometime” is tomorrow. I ended up picking up everything I needed (except the pasta, the wine, and the cheese for the pesto) the farmers’ market this morning.
I’m very excited! I’ve made tinned tonno in red sauce many a time, but I’d never heard of this before.
Pork loin roast in the oven with a CDP and an Italian wine I brought back from the Roscioli wine dinner, all I know is it’s from Sardinia and it’s delicious! Fondant potatoes and the boss is making green stuff.
@kaolis
Pro tip use russet slice to thickness you want and punch out with a 1.5 inch bisquet cutter, much easier than hand slicing. And correct the pork didn’t suck!
2018 Andrew Murray Syrah Tous les Jours Syrah with taco salad (to use up leftover meatloaf). The meatloaf was 2/3 supermarket ground beef and 1/3 Flannery rich blend as an experiment. The meatloaf was better, but not by enough to justify the expense. The syrah paired well, with the spice in the taco meat picking up the pepper in the wine.
Last licks for September: last night, 2021 Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé, which was refreshing alongside some spicy Indian takeout.
Friday, I finally got around to opening one of the 2020 Royal Slope Red blend I bought on BD from Erica Orr. Mostly Merlot, and quite lovely. I saw her email announcing her 2021 vintage and figured I’d better get cracking on these. With lemon-rosemary roast chicken. (Thanks, Trader Joe!)
Oh, I forgot the green stuff! Some of which was yellow. Roasted zucchini/yellow squash.
Seemed like a rosé kinda day. Enjoying the cool weather until the heat wave hits.
@hscottk
Drinking an IPA at Citi Field. Eat your heart out, @ScottW58!
@InFrom Ha! Nice!
How’s the Irish guy’s porchetta?
@klezman Well, it wasn’t quite what you’d expect to buy in a piazza somewhere in Italy, but it was a damn tasty sandwich.
@klezman The salsa verde upgrade was worth the extra 2 bucks.
@InFrom @klezman
Well damn tasty is still damn tasty! Back in Rome and stumbled on another one, I’m going to miss this shit
2016 Sybille Kuntz Riesling Spätlese trocken
2019 Williams Selyem Gewürztraminer Late Harvest Vista Verde Vineyard

2019 Ty Caton CS Winemaker’s Cuvee, Moon Mtn.
Tasting group last night. The side by sides of the Oregon whites were interesting. Subtle nuances, tasted over several hours to track development. The favorite at the beginning was not the favorite a few hours later. Great time was had by all.
@chefjess quite the mix…nice
Last night campesino ‘21 isa rose at the lake cabin, and it’s raining!
@CorTot Nice! How is it? I’ve never had a Ridge Dusi. What’s the alcohol?
@klezman very fruit forward but also very tasty. Clocked in at 15.5%.
A Riesling cooler from Harbour Estates in Niagara and then 2017 Cabot Pinot Noir, Humboldt County.
@chefjess
The one that has eluded me oh well can’t have them all.
@chefjess @ScottW58 I picked up 4 of those at the Carlsbad Costco last week. Glad to know it’s a good one!
@chefjess @klezman @ScottW58 Has been quite a few vintages since I’ve had that
Had a lovely dinner last night at Osteria il Sostegno in Rome, very reasonable too I might have dug into the braised oxtail dish before the pic and missed a couple others, I was hungry ha
@ScottW58
Oooh. All of that looks delicious!
Opened this on Wednesday, but forgot to post here. Finishing it today and it’s still drinking beautifully.
@kawichris650 Great to hear! My 11’s are long gone but have a few 12s and some 13s.
@FritzCat
Nice piece of work!
@ScottW58 Thank you.
@kaolis Nice ribs! That wine looks good too.
@kaolis @klezman They do look amazing. How was the PN/ribs pairing? I tend to go a bit heavier (zin, barbera, sangiovese, GSM, merlot, etc) with ribs.
@hscottk @kaolis Yeah, that’s usually where I go too. But as I understand it, KB is a big Pinot.
@hscottk @klezman short story long is I grab Pinot first.
@kaolis @klezman I’m convinced! Pinot and ribs next time.
@hscottk @kaolis @klezman
Ahem racks of ribs and Leroy freaking ballers
@hscottk @klezman @ScottW58 Wasn’t on my dime but was happy to play, and not only seems like a long time ago, it was! You’re alive??
@hscottk @kaolis @klezman
Back last night and still kicking… Kind of
@hscottk @kaolis @ScottW58 get recovered and then let’s do dinner!
Snake River Farms wagyu zabuton
1994 Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County
2013 Woot Cellars Zinfandel Vinitwo del Finito
@klezman How’s the Woot Cellars Zin holding up?
@catcoland just opened it. It’s under screw cap. First impressions are all “yum”. No worries about this getting too old any time soon.
@klezman Thanks and good to hear!
I’ve got 11 I need to find and start drinking.
@catcoland no rush but certainly no need to wait! I think I have 9 more.
@klezman Brings back great memories.
2017 Iron Horse Vineyards Pinot Noir Deer Gate
Alaska Gold salmon and some pasta dish with basil and tomato swmbo whipped up.
@rjquillin I didn’t know you drank wine that young!
@klezman desperation
@klezman @rjquillin arm’s reach?
@kaolis @klezman
Exactly, no prospecting for relics.
A lifo pull.
@chipgreen how was it?
@bunnymasseuse @chipgreen And what grape(s) is it?
@bunnymasseuse @klezman
@chipgreen @klezman ooh sounds like something up my alley!
@bunnymasseuse @chipgreen I didn’t know they grew Bordeaux varieties in Virginia.
'13 Victory coming up,
'cause the earlier vintages were too deep in the stack…
Couple of 12 oz Morgan Wagyu striploins and other assorted tbd sides.
@rjquillin Would love to hear your thoughts. Haven’t cracked one yet.
@hscottk Been decanting for a couple hours, and so far I’m liking it. Just too many of these (vintage) so popping one just because.
@hscottk @rjquillin not even Wellington Wednesday either!
@rjquillin
I feel like many of us hoard certain bottles of wine because we appreciate and treasure not only the wine, but the winemaker’s efforts as well.
However, based on various winemaker’s comments I’ve seen over the years, many of them would prefer for us to do exactly as you’re doing. Drink and enjoy the wine, just because…
@kawichris650 @rjquillin Wonderful sentiment. And it doesn’t hurt that you have an endless supply of Wellington, yes?
@hscottk @rjquillin
I admit to having a lot, but it’s certainly not endless. Ron on the other hand…
@kawichris650 @rjquillin For Ron, it’s not the having, it’s the finding!
@hscottk @kawichris650
There is an abundance, and it seems I do hoard a bit as well.
All for the kids…
Those that I don’t ‘find’ that is.
@hscottk @kawichris650 @rjquillin those kids will be drinking well for life!
I think I have a bottle of that, and a ‘12 maybe? … but for no reason at all if I bought even a case of Wellington I’d be surprised… now those MR strips are a fave

@kaolis Lookin’ good! How’d it turn out?
@InFrom All in all pretty tasty…maybe an hour or so late but all was forgiven
2018 Beringer Knights Valley CS with 1 1/2" thick lamb chops, sautéed mushrooms, zucchini and brussels sprouts.
@davirom
I keep looking at those when they go on sale.
Any good?
@rjquillin Fruit forward, not very complex, but we thought it was tasty. A little hot at first but smooth after about 2 hours. Maybe decant? Reviews said drink now but I suspect its got a few more years.
Pinot rut. With leftover chicken tacos from last night.
Kutch offer out tomorrow.
Happy Wednesday!
Hopping on the bandwagon.
@msten
Any issues with removing the cork?
I used an ah-so on tonight’s bottle and it came out effortlessly, fortunately.
@kawichris650 Coravin tonight. I too go with Ah-so with older corks.
Also on the bandwagon.
2012 Wellington Zinfandel Meeks Hilltop Ranch
Still working on that Victory, it lasted to Wednesday.
2017 Waxwing Riesling À la Volée Tondré Grapefield with Buffalo wings
@chipgreen wow, you still have those? Ran through my RBW years ago but remember it fondly. Sadly, I believe the winery is no more.
@karenhynes Welcome back! Akways interested in what you’re drinking.
@jmdavidson1 I have been slacking (in posting, not necessarily in drinking).
Casemate arrival. Grilled Sicilian
swordfish, fusilli with tomatoes, oven charred broccoli.
@jmdavidson1 That sounds so good!!!
@jmdavidson1 @karenhynes
That looks so good!!
@jmdavidson1
Looking at this again I have got to make this! Is it marcella hazan recipe or something else?
About to grill a tri-tip after the kids go to bed and opening a 2010 Tablas Creek Mourvèdre.
2010 Dry Creek Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Dry Creek Valley
@rjquillin If you have these, drink-up; imo.
While it was still interesting and not compromised, it clearly had gotten too buried for too long.
Back to the Victory I’ve been nursing along…
Smoked a brisket last night, thank god champagne pairs with everything back to life at home
@ScottW58 Shabby…I don’t know how you stoop to eat such crud!
@klezman @ScottW58 You must have misread the label. It’s “Krug” not “Crud”.
@klezman
Someone has To do it so I raised my hand
2016 Cult Cab and more of the same Pinot Noir Blanc (Anne Amie Prisme) as last night.
Well ordered some Chinese food but felt like drinking Bordeaux but could not decide on what? Both will do, damn the pairings
@ScottW58 More important question - what’s the good Chinese food near you?
@klezman
We have always liked Chin Chins
Ordering sushi and opening a 2016 Paetra Riesling “K”
@CorTot back at the Arboretum?
@klezman yeah, for my dads birthday, honestly this last concert of the summer is the way to go, it may still be very hot but the sun goes down earlier and you they start playing earlier but still end at 10pm.
@CorTot that sounds like a win all around
A hazy IPA from Calgary, AB
@chipgreen Canadian beer for American football?
@klezman
Why is the field only 100 yards long?
@chipgreen Because Harvard’s soccer/rugby pitch was undersized!
@pjmartin
Love me some Sandler PN. Can make out the vintage but not the vineyard?
@pjmartin Nice presentation. Yumm!
@chipgreen Berserker day tenth anniversary, blend of vineyards, 2017. Local corn (Graef’s) home grown tomatoes and basil. All very tasty.
2010 Toccata Dolcetto w/hot buttered cheesesteaks (again!), Rally’s seasoned fries and candied Sriracha bacon.
@chipgreen
Do say it’s a solid bottle, need to find them.
@chipgreen
That bacon looks and sounds delicious!!!
@rjquillin
Yes, smooth and easy drinking Dolcetto with dusty plum and black cherry flavors.
2007 Wellington Cabernet Sauvignon Karren Vineyard
[edit] the '07 gets the nod over the '13 Victory
@rjquillin the 2012 and 13 Victory bottles have received decent but not stellar reviews on CT. Maybe they need more time?
@hscottk @rjquillin the ones I’ve tried seem to be coming along, slowly. I expect they’ll be excellent in time.
@hscottk @klezman
10 vs. 16 years post vintage; yeah, the '13 could use some additional time…
Morgan Ranch strip loin medallion and La Sirena Cab, best friend of 50+ years visiting.
@rc70 looks great! Sous vide?
@hscottk On my grill, per Morgan Ranch suggestion - place on hot grill make grill marks then place on upper rack, turn 3 or 4 times - about 5 minutes total each side. Pull at internal temp of 120 rest 5 to 7 minutes. It worked
@rc70 Nice work!
2019 Winesmith tannat with turf and surf - ribeye steak and citrus marinated shrimp. And some green stuff.
Went to a dinner last night with a couple friends and some people visiting on business from New York. A good time was had! Now I have to tee off ugh I’m tired.
@ScottW58 bummer I missed that. Too far and Lea got sick so there was no way she’d have let me go.
@klezman
Hope she is feeling better!
@ScottW58 She’s working on it…
When you guys free to meet up? This weekend is Rosh Hashannah but after that we should be around.
@klezman
Busy next weekend but should be soon.
A long ago Berserker Day purchase. 2012 Sonkin Cellars Syrah w/BBQ pulled pork, cheesy risotto and mashers.
@chipgreen yum
Decided to pop something young - Bedrock 2021 Old Vine Zinfandel. It’s surprisingly enjoyable for my palate this young. Plenty of fruit but not overwhelmingly so.
@klezman I like that a lot, it’s in a good spot. Only bought a sixer and I’ll probably drink 'em up
@kaolis @klezman I have one, lone bottle of ‘18 ovz I’ve been saving. Need to pop that soon and finally try a Bedrock.
@hscottk @kaolis Yeah, they’re good and they don’t seem to need a tonne of time. Not that they don’t benefit from it, though.
@hscottk @klezman '13 still drinks well as of a few months ago, the OVZ
An excellent pairing with Flannery hangers. Wine showed very well. Previous bottle in June seemed slightly oxidized. This was in a great place with cassis and tobacco and just enough dark fruit to keep it interesting.
@hscottk pile of meat…worthy
With brat burgers topped with too much cheese…it is Wisconsin after all
@kaolis
Brat… burgers?
@chipgreen Heck yeah… the local meat guy sells his brat mix bulk and in patties, and links of course
That cork gave quite a hard time. If only I had one of those Durands…
2017 Fortant Minervois Grands Terroirs Syrah Blend
$10 GO flyer; not bad at PnP, a few days and we’ll see…
Last night and thanks to @jmdavidson1 for the recipe, simple but so good! And toasted up an Italian bread with olive oil and some delicious Corbara tomatoes on top. Could not decide on the wine again so a little of both
@ScottW58 Looks like you’ve gone native

Hmmm looks like another trip to NYC needs to be booked oh and thanks for the link to the traditional foods and meat eaters of Marche, we found them and ate them all! fried meat stuffed olives/fried cream/fried artichokes etc.
@davirom @ScottW58 That is great, I’m so glad! Those olives sounded awesome.
WORKER BEES! HERCULES! TURKEY GREASE! AWESOME!
@mediocrebot Oops, my bad.
@InFrom @mediocrebot
Yes they were a w e s o m e
Giant sandwich, broccoli rabe, red bubbles.
@InFrom
That sandwich makes my heart happy
@InFrom lol, everyone needs a giant sandwich!
Spanish tasting last night. Lots of fun. Wines were lovely. Rep from the winery led the tasting.
2015 Twisted Oak Graciano with ribs and crunchy things.
International Grenache day, what else. Colors showing up in the background
Fjellene Friday!
With pizza and jo-jos.
@chipgreen fjellene rings a bell, but not for malbec…hmmm
@chipgreen
Jo jo’s??
@chipgreen @karenhynes
I was wondering the same, but also too lazy to try to look it up. Must be some OH thing, imo.
@chipgreen @kaolis
2010 Fjellene Malbec Les Collines Vineyard Block 44
a 5/9/2014 WW offer
@karenhynes @rjquillin
I’m guessing they’re potato wedges, steak fries, etc.
@karenhynes @kawichris650 @rjquillin
@klezman Shana tova!
@klezman L’shana tova!
Popcorn and beers for lunch, then a little comfy meatloaf for dinner
@kaolis An unlikely but impressive pairing
@kaolis @rjquillin
Margaux and meatloaf and popcorn and beer what could be wrong with that pairing?
@rjquillin @ScottW58 Was a tough day but we made it.
2014 Sarah’s Vineyard Nuits d’ Enfer
2017 Sarah’s Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains
Tasty SB from costco to pair with a nicoise salad topped with grilled salmon.un
Add on pic.
This Pet Nat paired well with 2 acres of overgrown grass.
Fire pit season has arrived!
2017 WineSmith Norton
2021 Thomas Henry Chardonnay
With Portuguese Cataplana we needed a white.
@msten Just looked up some recipes, sounds tasty. What assortment of seafood did you use?
@rjquillin Cod, shrimp, clams, halibut
@rc70 how is that? I’ve nearly bought some a couple times.
2017 Iron Horse Unoaked Chard with herb marinated chicken and yellow rice.
@chipgreen Great minds and all that. I just put a 2013 Iron Horse Vineyards Chardonnay Estate into the freezer. Making a homegrown San Marzano tomato sauce tonight.
@chipgreen @klezman
And some unoaked just appeared for sale too in deals
Last night sisters came over with roasted chicken baked potatoes and green stuff.
Finished the 2012 Notre Vin cab from last week. Did well under a Repour. With baby backs and a Costco prime ribeye. No green stuff in sight!
The last of the good sweet corn of the season… I think? Made some fritters and sausage, can’t wait to put a poached egg and hot sauce on one tomorrow morning.
2011 Turley, Hayne Vineyard, Petite Syrah.
@FritzCat How’s that doing? Based on age I’d worry it’s either in a dumb phase or just getting out of it.
@klezman Had to taste, day2.
Yesterday it was very good, but a little more zippy than I expected. Now it’s calmed down a little and is delicious.
I’ve got lots of PS. When and what do you expect in the dumb phase?
@klezman
Why is this theory always quoted around here as some kind of fact? Because Kent Rasmussen said that is how you should drink PS 20 years ago?
@FritzCat Good to hear it!
@klezman @ScottW58 So, according to this theory, when should PS be drunk? When I moved, about 8 years ago, I stuck a few cases of PS and Amarone in a corner…“out of sight, out of mind.”
@FritzCat @ScottW58 younger than 8 or 9 years old or older than 15-20 years, depending on who you ask.
Belated birthday dinner at a local Italian restaurant.
@kawichris650
And belated Birthday wishes! All three dishes look amazing.
Last glass of that '13 Victory opened a few weeks ago.
@rjquillin Don’t think I’ve done a wine over a few weeks…subtracting fortified/port from the discussion…you’re my new hero!
@kaolis @rjquillin
Hero or does not drink enough
@kaolis @ScottW58
Ahh, you forget the wonderfulness and superiority of Ar backfilling!
When the contents reach the sweet spot, fill.
Good for however long you want at that point.
@kaolis @rjquillin
Like I said you don’t drink enough!
Forget about the chorizo and cheese stuffed chicken, the tempura fried corn off the Cobb with Japanese mayo and chili powder is life changing
@ScottW58 yeah, we’d eat that
@ScottW58
I believe you but cannot just “forget about” chorizo and cheese stuffed chicken!
'16
After all of @kaolis talk I found one of these and had to try it, I think 12 was the last Kutch I had and damn this was good! Needed some air to really come around. With random leftovers
@ScottW58 that took a bit of work to fix…
@rjquillin
Lol I tried to add text after uploading the pic and don’t quite know what happened after that thanks
@rjquillin @ScottW58 '15 was good to Mr. Kutch. In fact the '15 regular Sonoma Coast bottles are quite tasty today. Side note you mention '12, another fine vintage for Jaime, his Sonoma Coast bottling strong again. McDougall always a fave.
@kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58 Picked up some 2016 McDougall on Winebid. Will definitely decant, thx!
2012 Raymond Usseglio CdP Cuvée Girard with chuck steak
2017 Twisted Oak Graciano from the last TO offer. Wonderful, better on the second night. Color advancing fast in the background.
@pjmartin 'tis the season
molarchae asked for bubbly, so I just put this in the fridge: NV Edouard Brun & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Brut Réserve
Will probably make Sichuan noodles
@karenhynes Pinot Friday? Of course. How is the pnb?
To go with a grilled pork chop, polenta and parm, as well as farm fresh c o t c.
@jmdavidson1
Mmmmmm…polenta!! My fav!
Prime time drinking window, delicious.
@rc70 that looks yummy
@CorTot
clearly some recognize the bottle; I need some additional help
@CorTot @rjquillin This looks like it: https://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=3510165
85% Syrah / 15% Tannat
@CorTot @klezman
Looks like a nice score from the deceased UC.
@klezman @rjquillin it was nice bottle, saved 1/2 for another night.
@CorTot @klezman @rjquillin
Speaking of the deceased UC… a possible Phoenix rising from the ashes?
https://www.wine-searcher.com/m/2023/09/underground-cellar-claws-out-of-bankruptcy
@chipgreen @klezman @rjquillin while I do hope those that got screwed eventually get something I would never purchase from a company owned by Shaw again. Lots of problems with not a lot of upside. UC was very gimmicky.
@chipgreen @CorTot @klezman
Thanks Chip.
Please do keep us informed as this proceeds.
@rjquillin
There was an email sent on September 12th, with a correction email on the 13th. They went right into my spam folder in gmail. Thankfully I caught that article which made me check my spam. You might want to check yours as well.
@chipgreen
Already checked, and found nothing in either spam, junk or deleted-not-yet-flushed.
Forward to me?
@rjquillin
Sure, can you whisper your email address to me? My old operamail account closed down and I failed to save my contacts in time. That goes for anyone else who feels they might be affected and can’t find the emails. FYI, they were from Ashby & Geddes. Sent September 12th & 13th.
Viognier
@KSchweitz Short, sweet, to the point…bam!
@chefjess
One of the really nice qpr wines IMHO.
@chefjess @ScottW58 agree with your HO…hey, who you callin’ ho?
2011 Tercero cuvée loco with lamb chops. Great pairing! Not pictured: green stuff.
@davirom
And I tried to get a Durand .
@davirom
I don’t know why but I had random bottles too?

After a great day of golf Andrew Will and some meatballs that are going to be great… I hope oh and green stuff.
@ScottW58 Let me know next time you order from them so I can tack on a couple things to try?
@ScottW58
I didn’t know you had wine that old.
@chipgreen
Lol accidents happen
@klezman
Heavily stocked up right now but sure, meatballs were out of this world good!
@klezman @ScottW58 didn’t know about the ground meat…
2010 Lailey Vineyard Pinot Noir Brickyard, Niagara River VQA
2013 Harvest Moon Zinfandel Late Harvest
No idea what I’m going to cook yet though.
and more of that '07 Karren, yes, from weeks ago
The pic doesn’t do justice to what was in the bottle.With roasted potatoes and salmon in anchovy butter. And green stuff.
Oh and the cork was in perfect shape.
@InFrom
Sounds delicious and that 2007 RRV Pinot is probably my favorite WineSmith wine.
@InFrom
@ScottW58
Haha! I am going to have to lookup that cheese puff recipe…
Paired, of course, with a NY strip steak.
2013 Turnbull Estate.
Sort of under the radar. Very good.
Can be had for $40 - $45.
With fried chicken.
Wednesday!
The cork broke, ah-so for the bottom half
Casemate’s purchase to go with barrimundi topped with mango/habanero salsa and a side of beans and rice.
With a Flannery burger trying out one of these on its release day, I backed out at the last minute and am proud of myself, sadly it’s a fantastic bottle!
@ScottW58
Corley family fruit?
@ScottW58
What year? I had the 2017 a few months back and it was delicious.
@chefjess @ScottW58 I got the email but bam it was gone
@kaolis @ScottW58
@chefjess @kaolis
@chipgreen ? no clue
@ScottW58
My bad, I see now it’s Montecillo vineyard, not Monticello. I have quite a few Keating wines with Montecillo vineyard fruit.
Been a crazy week…back to one of these early Rhys bottles. Really good. Loin lamb chops/mushroom risotto/leafy green stuff
@Mark_L
Wow 45! Congrats
@Mark_L
Happy Anniversary!
@Mark_L Happy 45!
@Mark_L
Happy belated Anniversary!
Tasty little wine, and that patty no Iberico and Wagyu blend, that’s 73/27 beef straight from Food Lion. And topped with a fancy mix of Kraft American slice and 18yo cheddar.
@kaolis Those look like vine ripened tomatoes/Yumm!
@kaolis
Are you sure the burger is under that pile of cheese nice!
Tasty little wine with some kind of chicken stir fry loaded with green stuff
@ScottW58 Hey that looks kind of familiar
@kaolis
You shamed me to open it
@ScottW58 ha!
steamed up some fresh claws
With a bowl of green stuff and grilled chicken.
2013 Twisted Oak Viognier
Costco mac & cheese and Caesar salad. Dinner of champions!
2013 SLOdown Love Hammer CS. Benchmark bin sale. Excellent. Went well with a burger.
@jmdavidson1 Terrible name for a wine…great bottle!
@jmdavidson1 @klezman interesting name for sure
2020 WineSmith Lake Co. Tempranillo
and something that rather resembles a pizza
good pairing
@rjquillin The rustic look makes it look delicious.
@kaolis
a most interesting horizontal surface the bottle and glass are upon.
@kaolis
I had heard about that but I’m not a brandy drinker, good?
@ScottW58 It’s quite good. I’m an Armagnac fan, drink very little and even less these days. It’s not quite as spicy as a comparison (to what I drink) and maybe a little fuller in body. Clocks in at 90, it likes a drop or two of water to bring it around.
@rjquillin I’ve a small collection of paraphernalia, much of it tucked away in boxes unfortunately. I have to be able to look at a bit of it though right?
@kaolis @ScottW58
I’ve got an unopened 1979 Armagnac Castarède Bas Armagnac tucked away. Have to keep it in mind should that be of interest and we ever have a mutual opportunity to make use of it…
So, a window with a glass top as a table top?
Inexpensive, but delicious, vermentino paired with Pasta alla Carlofortina.
@jmdavidson1 Fresh tuna, or tinned?
@InFrom jarred in olive oil.
@jmdavidson1 Looks delish, gonna give it a try sometime.
I only have dried pasta in the house, but for this effort I’m going to try to find some fresh trofie or the like.
Pork loin roast in the oven with a CDP and an Italian wine I brought back from the Roscioli wine dinner, all I know is it’s from Sardinia and it’s delicious! Fondant potatoes and the boss is making green stuff.
@ScottW58 Ok, I’m making those potatoes one day this week, and that pork didn’t suck I bet
@kaolis
@InFrom
Nice. I’ve had an older vintage and enjoyed it. I think it will age nicely and be singing in a few years.
@chefjess I bet you’re right. Last year on BD I bought a few of her '19 Merlot, and I’ve been hoarding the last bottle.
Her Chenin Blanc is no slouch either.
@chefjess @InFrom
Yes to all three of those, damn nice imho
