Made some 'cello today. Of course it’s been marinating for months, and also we did taste it.
About a liter and a half of:
Limoncello, Orangecello and Blood Orange & Mandarin…cello.
2015 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella.
Not impressed at first, but an hour later with food…
The basil has been phenomenal this year, and makes
a darn good Pesto Pizza.
@rjquillin It is…I’ve only purchased the '21 chards, old vine and young vine. Liked both enough to re-order both, a nod to the young vine for me, the old vine for my lovely bride. My humble this is in a fine spot now but I’m sure I’ll see a few of these pop up here in 10 years when you forgot you had them…ha! Need to try some reds, and she’s a hoot, happy to toss a dollar or two her way.
Taco night. Unfortunately the power went out in the middle of preparing dinner. At least we are enjoying some tasty wine while waiting for it to be restored.
@kawichris650 I recall customs in Japan, I brought a case with a value well north of $500, how the agent kept apologizing for the amount of the tariff/tax; it was, iirc, perhaps all of $10~15.
A little WineSmith Malbec on the deck, as the Goodyear blimp floats overhead. We are fairly close to the hangar location, so blimp sightings are not unusual, but they don’t usually fly directly over our house!
On a Spanish budget this evening
2016 Bodegas Campillo Rioja Crianza
2018 Bodegas La Tonada Rioja Camino del Monte Crianza
Italian sausage, fried taters, okra and mustard
Morgan Ranch strip which looks just like the other Morgan Ranch strips…they really are one of my favorite steaks, probably didn’t need the hunk of foie I threw at it…6 North Flagstone 2013 Cabernet
Went to a wine dinner at Carrabba’s in the Hall of Fame city, Canton, OH. Was surprised to see 3 Cabs on the menu. The Austin Hope was our WotN. The Daou Cab was a surprising disappointment. The first 3 pairings worked very well, but the Daou was not a good match for dessert and did not get better as we continued to sip it on its own.
@chipgreen We also went in Fayetteville, NY. The four courses were very good, and decent value. Agree that the Austin Hope was very good (Some might say “over-extracted and too much oak”, but we liked it). Also agree that the Daou didn’t go well with the desert, but all wines served can be purchased at the restaurant, and they don’t have a desert wine on their menu. Next month is Orin Swift.
@FritzCat
Nice! We are looking forward to the Orin Swift dinner. We just found out about these monthly wine dinners at Carrabbas and plan to be fairly regular attendees.
2019 Schrader Double Diamond; Schrader’s “2nd” wine.
To Kalon Vineyard! 2022 Wine Spectator’s #1 WOTY. I always try to find the Wines of the year, and got 2 of these.
With Carnitas Nachos w/ homemade salsa and freshly picked cherry tomatoes, etc.
It was ok…as I sit here in a dopamine stupor…
@chipgreen@kaolis@karenhynes they managed to keep themselves touring long enough for me to see them. So that’s good.
They got a new drummer earlier this year it seems.
Also, the line for $19 beers is quite long!
The offspring was a great opener too. Brought me back 30 years awfully quick.
@klezman On the menu as Coquilles Saint-Jacques but your description is apt. SWMBO had the Boeuf Bourguignon. The wine was an attempt to thread the needle.
@kaolis the CG or M-S?
I really didn’t pay much attention, but in general, this is the best MS I’ve had, and I’ve tried a few from GO that just didn’t compare well to this one. The comments from user33071884 at the end of the offer thread do it justice, nothing to wow you, but a nice light, pleasant bottle to not contemplate that should please a crowd. Definitely not acid driven like Our Wines. Yeah, not much help, I’m a lousy Rat. Pleased with the purchase and I’ll pay more attention next bottle.
@chipgreen
I sure hope that take-home is tasty, but at least you have a good bottle if it isn’t.
I seem to have some number of the '05’s I likely need to locate.
Bears v Dallas… was hotter than snot, parking is on asphalt …worked in a couple cabs and a sauv blanc and a beer and maybe a little Don Julio reposado but dang too warm to do serious damage. ha!.. tapped a little Morgan Ranch and Flannery and wings and meatballs and stuff…
2006 Max Wagner Trabener Würzgarten Riesling Beerenauslese
found buried in the frig, open, for, don’t know, at least 6 months. May have dosed it with Ar; dunno.
Sediment you ask, of course, and a gorgeous amber color.
2001 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Gran Reserva 150 Aniversario Tempranillo Blend
This seems to be in a very good place right now,
consumed with a mildly spicy Italian sausage in red sauce plate at a local place. Drink or hold; outstanding CM offer from five years ago.
We actually go out to non-sushi places! 2018 Liquid Farm Chardonnay, Golden Slope. Fantastic with monk fish and tuna. If you close your eyes and pretend, you can almost see it.
It does here! Wearing long sleeves, Pool temp has dropped from 80 to 68, leaves are turning color.
Made some 'cello today. Of course it’s been marinating for months, and also we did taste it.

About a liter and a half of:
Limoncello, Orangecello and Blood Orange & Mandarin…cello.
@FritzCat always wanted to try my hand at limoncello
@kaolis It’s easy…just do it! Turns out plain lemon is the best tasting.
Nope, 100 here today. Summer saved all the high temps for the last week of August and Labor Day weekend.
Just enjoying a nice cup of coffee this morning, perfect for getting the day started!
Just enjoying a nice cup of coffee this morning, perfect for getting the day started! For more: Casemates Forum
It’s been absolutely gorgeous our neck of the woods Wisconsin way, sunny, around 50 in the morn, mid 70’s day…about to change…
September was ribs, smoker then finished on the grill…
zin with blt’s, new batch of bacon, a Sam’s Club belly, not bad at all
finally got into Morgan Ranch tenderloin tips, indeed they are tasty…
(sorry for bandwidth hogging)
@kaolis you been busy
Last night, our last bottle of 2009 Louis Latour Chardonnay, with steak & chicken stir-fry. Today, my first time making a Moscow Mule.
@chipgreen Proper barware and everything! I love a good Mule.
2015 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella.

Not impressed at first, but an hour later with food…
The basil has been phenomenal this year, and makes
a darn good Pesto Pizza.
With Sloppy Joes, onion rings and beans of green.
@chipgreen interesting combo…
and you def have some interesting wines your cellar, I’m just not that disciplined hanging on to stuff
Friday carry out…
@kaolis haven’t opened any of hers yet, and don’t have that one. Tasty?
@rjquillin It is…I’ve only purchased the '21 chards, old vine and young vine. Liked both enough to re-order both, a nod to the young vine for me, the old vine for my lovely bride. My humble this is in a fine spot now but I’m sure I’ll see a few of these pop up here in 10 years when you forgot you had them…ha! Need to try some reds, and she’s a hoot, happy to toss a dollar or two her way.
Now for something completely different.

@msten I remember their 2016 Gratitude
Mourvèdre Blend, lovely bottle
Taco night. Unfortunately the power went out in the middle of preparing dinner. At least we are enjoying some tasty wine while waiting for it to be restored.
@chipgreen Still have any of the 2004 as well?
@rjquillin
The 2004 Syrah is long gone. Still have some '10 Syrah and “Arcturus” blend.
@CorTot How is this one? My notes from…no date…(Needs time. High acid, needs steak. Decant!()
Good morning there in the states, but good evening here from Thailand.
They don’t drink much sparkling wine here. I kid you not… when I gently popped the cork, every head in the restaurant still turned haha.
@kawichris650 seems you’re visiting?
Did you pack some of your own bottles?
I did when I went to Japan
@rjquillin
Correct. I brought the Gruet and Rosato.
This is my first time in Asia. My trip was Minneapolis to Denver, Denver to Tokyo, and Tokyo to Bangkok
I would/should have brought more, but I was concerned about bottles getting heavily taxed or confiscated all together.
@kawichris650 I recall customs in Japan, I brought a case with a value well north of $500, how the agent kept apologizing for the amount of the tariff/tax; it was, iirc, perhaps all of $10~15.
When the wine runs out, you transition to something stronger.

@kawichris650 looks like trouble…ha!
A little WineSmith Malbec on the deck, as the Goodyear blimp floats overhead. We are fairly close to the hangar location, so blimp sightings are not unusual, but they don’t usually fly directly over our house!
@chipgreen About all I get flying overhead around here (central MO) are the A-10s flying out of Whiteman AFB over the Lake of the Ozarks.
I need to pay more attention. With leftover ribs I was looking for a Syrah, and not really reading the label, I pulled this “Sirah”
further reading my notes, I see this is claimed to be relabeled

2006 Quixote Petite Sirah
Yup, looks to be the same capsule/closure.
Whatever it is/was, it was good with the ribs and ready to drink.
@rjquillin you’ve still got some of those? Wow!
That was a great deal. Too bad TJ’s doesn’t often have wines like that any more.
@klezman @rjquillin Nice…I knew that closure graphic looked familiar
@CorTot new UC?
On a Spanish budget this evening
2016 Bodegas Campillo Rioja Crianza
2018 Bodegas La Tonada Rioja Camino del Monte Crianza

Morgan Ranch strip which looks just like the other Morgan Ranch strips…they really are one of my favorite steaks, probably didn’t need the hunk of foie I threw at it…6 North Flagstone 2013 Cabernet
Rose and ribs/wings
couple of other sips…
@kaolis
That marbling!
@jmdavidson1 2012
2019 Gård Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Klasse Reserve with Sesame Beef and green bean stir fry.
@msten Cindy has the 2020 Gard The Don Cabernet Sauvignon today
2019 Paola Sordo Barolo
Campo Grande Cheesy Skilled Ibérico Skirt Steak Pasta
were I to do this again, more cheese and add garlic
the Sordo was lite and young, but still tasty
@rjquillin looks delicious to me
Had a 2021 Baudry Chinon Le Domaine at a restaurant in Hartford. He makes such great wine - plenty of funk!
I’ve been slacking (preoccupied with waterfalls, temples, etc) but here are some photos from dinner Sunday night.

@kawichris650
Looks amazing!
@chipgreen @kawichris650
Rather looks like you did some outstanding catch-up
@chipgreen @kawichris650 @rjquillin Someone is having a great time it appears
@chipgreen @kaolis @kawichris650 @rjquillin Surprised to see salmon. I thought that was shunned a bit over there.

Walmart lamb leg steaks…
finished a few sips of '21 Keenan Chardonnay and Sandlands '20 Red Table wine
2019 Schrader Double Diamond; Schrader’s “2nd” wine.

Sampling a wine coming to a website near you, then off to see The Who!
@klezman
Have fun!!!
@karenhynes @klezman Well yes, that should be fun…the two of them in their 80’s…it’s only teenage wasteland? ha!
@kaolis @karenhynes @klezman
“Hope I die before I get old”
@klezman is Zach Starkey still drumming for them?
@chipgreen @kaolis @karenhynes they managed to keep themselves touring long enough for me to see them. So that’s good.
They got a new drummer earlier this year it seems.
Also, the line for $19 beers is quite long!
The offspring was a great opener too. Brought me back 30 years awfully quick.
@davirom @klezman I read they had a falling out with Zach Starkey.
@InFrom @klezman Shades of Spinal Tap
@davirom @InFrom they may be old but they still got it!
@davirom @InFrom @klezman
I also saw their “Farewell Tour”. At the Pontiac Silverdome in 1983. Never imagined the tour would last for 42 years!
@chipgreen @davirom @InFrom seriously, eh?
But at 80+ years old this was likely my last chance. I’m trying to see the good bands before they all die.
@davirom Is that a shellfish gratin or something? Looks like a shrimp and a scallop poking through.
@klezman On the menu as Coquilles Saint-Jacques but your description is apt. SWMBO had the Boeuf Bourguignon. The wine was an attempt to thread the needle.
2019 Michel-Schlumberger Pinot Noir Le Fou
washing down some Campo Grande pork and pasta.
@rjquillin and?
@kaolis the CG or M-S?

@rjquillin thanks, just curious. I was tempted at that price point but didn’t pull the trigger.
My birthday today, so…

I rode my bike down to the Finger Lakes and stopped at Six Eighty Cellars because:
They make a Fortified Riesling which is very good, and an Appassimento Cab Franc, which, although a little sweet, is very good.
@FritzCat
Happy Birthday!
@FritzCat Happy birthday!
@FritzCat
I missed it’s your B-day; hoping it’s been a good one for you.
@FritzCat @rjquillin HBD!
2010 Jana Cathedral with our $10 take-home spaghetti & meatballs from Saturday’s wine dinner.
The Cathedral is in a really nice place, for those who may be holding.
@chipgreen
I sure hope that take-home is tasty, but at least you have a good bottle if it isn’t.
I seem to have some number of the '05’s I likely need to locate.
@rjquillin
Love the classy bottles of those earlier vintages, even if they aren’t exactly rack-friendly.
Bears
@kaolis Looking forward to our annual Giants tailgate on Nov 2nd when the weather cools a bit. They might even have a win by then!
@hscottk as a Bears fan I don’t have a lot I can say, but the Russell Wilson experiment may be over I see…
2022 Winesmith Tempranillo
Lake County, 13% AbV
2006 Max Wagner Trabener Würzgarten Riesling Beerenauslese

found buried in the frig, open, for, don’t know, at least 6 months. May have dosed it with Ar; dunno.
Sediment you ask, of course, and a gorgeous amber color.
@rjquillin buried 6 months you must have a big ass fridge
With tangy glazed oven-baked pork chops, roasted potatoes and green stuff.
@chipgreen Reminiscent of a certain movie from 1964
what the hell is that mess? patty night…Hudson Valley duck/duck bacon, topped with a little fried prosciutto and egg…
My last bottle of 2013 Wellington Cabernet, Sonoma county.
@winedavid59
@rjquillin
Yes, those were delicious!
Early Anniversary staycation in Ohio’s Amish country.
@chipgreen and off to a good start
@chipgreen
Hope you and your wife have an amazing anniversary!
@chipgreen Happy Anniversary.
Did you bring the cat?:)
@pjmartin
No, that’s Oscar, official mascot of the Inn at Honey Run. He waltzed right into our Honeycomb room when we opened the patio door!
In Folly Beach, SC for 45th High School reunion, parental care and pre-retirement vacation. Heading back North just before the storms get here.
@pjmartin
Have fun!
@pjmartin Great place to call home.
With Chinese takeout. Still going strong. Paired especially well with shrimp toast.
1992 Corison Napa Valley
1997 Covey Run Riesling Icewine, Yakima Valley
We actually go out to non-sushi places! 2018 Liquid Farm Chardonnay, Golden Slope. Fantastic with monk fish and tuna. If you close your eyes and pretend, you can almost see it.
These guys do one of the best chards in CA.
