French winemaker Yannick Rousseau’s love affair with wine began at age five with his first glass of watered-down wine made by his grandpa, Pépé. Pépé was an Artisan Butcher, he also hunted his own food, and made his own wine. Yannick has fond memories of long dinners with many laughs and heated discussions accompanied by simple, delicious dishes and good, unpretentious wines. Yannick’s Dad was also an Artisan Butcher. ‘Son Of a Butcher’ Red Blend is a salute to his French heritage and a “homage” to the easy-going way of life in the South-West of France. Open a bottle any day of the week and enjoy the warmth of family and friends, and the delights of an everyday meal. Pépé and Yannick’s Dad (pictured on the label in front of the family’s butcher shop) would approve!
2021 was one of the best vintages in the last two decades for Northern California. Simply perfect growing and ripening conditions. SOB shows the softer side of Yannick’s favorite red grape - Tannat - and its amazing potential as a blending variety.
Color: Deep and bright black cherry.
Nose: Deep, full, generous, elegant, and profound with notes of blackberries, baked black cherry pie, cassis, dry herbs, dark chocolate, black olives, and delicate French oak.
Mouth: Supple entrance leading to juicy mid-palate, full-bodied, offering sweet spices, cocoa powder, pure dark berries, silky tannins, great balance, and fresh long finish. It’s an unmistakable California “resident”, rich, juicy, and with youthful vibe, but the one who doesn’t forget its French heritage and its “je ne sais quoi”.
Think of a delicious meat lasagna, pork chop, a steaming bowl of chili, meatloaf, eggplant parmesan, or “tout simplement” a juicy hamburger to pair with the wine. A rich red blend to go with your favorite comfort food.
Y. Rousseau Wines is a dream that began long ago in the South-West of France and continues to grow and evolve today. Yannick Rousseau, French native, founder and winemaker, followed his heart and passion for winemaking all the way to Napa Valley where he met his Texan-born wife, Susan. The two of them bring their combined entrepreneurial savvy to embrace the ebbs and flows of running a family winery with the legacy of their racines, hospitable style, and discriminating artisanship.
Yannick’s reputation has been made not by following in anyone’s particular footsteps but rather by taking what he has learned from great mavericks and integrating it into what he discovers to be true. His history of working with grape varietals from the Southwest of France is well known. Now, he carries forward his winemaking mission still embracing Colombard, Tannat and other favored varietals and blending them to create revived, and even edge-bending wines.

@rpstrong well, I came over to blow the horn,( after I had snagged my case,) but ya beat me to it.
For me it’s a triple hit, its cheap red from Rutherford, & over there it doesn’t ship to my normal state, but the week it arrives, I’ll be in Colorado, where it does ship, plus I get free shipping across David’s network , along with a coupon. (is that 3 or 4?)
This is young fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon. We enjoyed it paired with rack of lamb. It will defend any grocery store wine at the price point I guessed it was $20 +/- a bottle retail. So around $10 Casemates would be a good deal.
We were psyched to get the nod as Lab Rat for this go round, and thrilled to get a mystery incoming wine on Wed. After some UPS misses (but I caught him down the block!) I opened this and we drank it Friday night for dinner with some pan-fried gnocchi we had a recipe for.
I had to do a quick google after we popped and poured because I wanted to know what was in the blend. Before I did, my impression was this was probably zin or cabernet, with some other stuff thrown in. It was a touch hot at first but that blew off quickly and I was left with a pretty big, forward wine. There was some spiciness to it but also fruit forward. My initial impression was – decent priced, grab at the store because the label jumps out at you, 20 dollar wine for a regular night when you’re making a decent dinner.
After looking up the blend, I saw the high amount of Tannat in the mix. I happen to really like varietal Tannat, and I gave it another taste with my new knowledge – I would like to say I can tell now knowing it’s nearly half Tannat – but I did cheat. I definitely didn’t guess it up front.
All in all, this is a fairly big/forward red wine blend that would be a totally appropriate buy for 20 bucks and was very enjoyable with some heavy pasta. I think it would have been better paired with meat (and the photos an earlier rat posted looked tasty). At this price point, it’s a solid deal and if you need a wine of this type, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Can anyone confirm this is available in AL??
Just got shot down on my meh order and see this one is supposedly available to ship here. Don’t want to get my hopes up too high!
Has anyone else had issues with super dry crumbly corks for this offer? The wine still tastes fine, but getting the cork out of the bottle has been a problem.

Check out another red blend at meh.com - dirt cheap, especially because you also get a $20 CM coupon with your order.
@rpstrong The $20 coupon kind of messes up the math: net $20 for 6, $50 for 12. Makes 6 the better value.

Ordered as well. Did not receive the coupon yet. Did you?
@gtcharlie @rpstrong @winecaseaholic Usually the coupon comes packed with the wine.
@gtcharlie @Mark_L @winecaseaholic I read somewhere (probably the internet, so it must be true) that they would be emailed this coming week.

FYI, offer for red blend on meh will get you a $20 coupon for here.
@yorkrk
but not for use on this offering… won’t be sent til next week.
This is a wonderful any day wine. Got the Pedroncelli case for daily drinking, but might have to restock on this.

I am loving the 2020 Son of a Butcher I ordered here a few weeks ago, guess I’ll go look for comparison reviews!

@chienfou first on the list
@chienfou it’s dependent on the winery, so the one on Meh is likely different than this offering.
