Son of a Butcher Red Blend is a salute to Yannick’s French heritage and an “homage” to the easy-going way of life in the South-West of France. Open a bottle any day of the week and enjoy the warmth of family and friends, and the delights of an everyday meal. Pépé and Yannick’s Dad (pictured, age 10, on the label in front of Pépé’s butcher shop) would approve!
2021 was one of the best vintages in the last two decades for Northern California. Simply perfect growing and ripening conditions. SOB shows the softer side of Yannick’s favorite red grape - Tannat - and its amazing potential as a blending varietal. Deep and bright black cherry color. Full, generous, elegant, and profound nose with notes of blackberries, baked black cherry pie, cassis, dry herbs, dark chocolate, black olives, and delicate French oak. A supple entrance leads to a juicy mid-palate mouthfeel. Full-bodied resonance offering sweet spices, cocoa powder, pure dark berries, silky tannins, great balance, and a fresh long finish.
Think of a delicious meat lasagna, pork chop, a steaming bowl of chili, meatloaf, eggplant parmesan, or “tout simplement” a juicy hamburger to pair with the wine. A rich red blend to go with your favorite comfort food.
Y. Rousseau Wines is a dream that began long ago in the South-West of France and continues to grow and evolve today. Yannick Rousseau, French native, founder and winemaker, followed his heart and passion for winemaking all the way to Napa Valley where he met his Texan-born wife, Susan. The two of them bring their combined entrepreneurial savvy to embrace the ebbs and flows of running a family winery with the legacy of their racines, hospitable style, and discriminating artisanship.
Yannick’s reputation has been made not by following in anyone’s particular footsteps but rather by taking what he has learned from great mavericks and integrating it into what he discovers to be true. His history of working with grape varietals from the Southwest of France is well known. Now, he carries forward his winemaking mission still embracing Colombard, Tannat and other favored varietals and blending them to create revived, and even edge-bending wines.

Just a couple of days ago, tracking info said we had a 5-pound package at the UPS depot, so we headed over there to pick it up, and found a bottle of Son of a Butcher 2021 Red Blend. Since we’ve been enjoying the SOB White and Rosé, we were very enthusiastic about tasting the red. As it turned out, the pizza guy who hangs out at the farm market where we pick up our produce allotment was making a variety of focaccia on Tuesday, and a couple of them looked like good pairings for the wine.
Home we went, with the wine and the focaccia. It was a warm day, so we put the wine in the fridge for a bit before opening it, just to achieve a more suitable serving temperature. It worked. After a sample was poured, a nice aroma of dark fruits exuded from the glass. The first taste offered plenty of firm tannins and more of the dark fruits. It turned out to be a terrific accompaniment to the focaccia loaded with eggplant, peppers, and more. At 14.7% ABV, I didn’t notice a bit of heat.
I thoroughly enjoyed this wine, and felt it would be well-suited to drinking with a variety of foods, from focaccia or pizza to grilled meats. I placed it at around $20 at retail, but the website said $24. At the Casemates price of $11.67/bottle, if you buy a case, this is an outstanding deal, in my opinion.
Earlier in the week I received notification from UPS that a package was to be delivered the next day. I emailed Alice to find out if we were, in fact, “Official Lab Rats.” ddeuddeg and I are happy to report for duty! The wine that arrived was a 2021 Son of a Butcher Red Wine. ddeuddeg and I are quite familiar with this wine and other wines made by the Frenchman, Yannick Rousseau. ddeuddeg and I can’t even remember how we first came across his wines! We set up a tasting at Yannick’s tasting room post RPM tour one year. wkdpanda and I both purchased wines. There were a few others who joined us. I think it was that very day that I became a wine club member. Alice and WineDavid were likely unaware of this when they sent this bottle. When we opened it at our UPS Depot, I knew that we were in for a treat. Yannick does not make bad wines!
We picked up our wine on the way to pick up our CSA box for the week. Every week there’s a guy at the farm who uses veggies from the farm and bakes pizzas on the spot in a large wood-fired “hive” of an oven. However, we had some wicked weather earlier in the day and he decided to go with focaccias instead. ddeuddeg and I each got two different focaccias. I’m sorry that I cannot provide more detail as to the toppings. I know that I had pepperoni and hot honey and ddeuddeg had eggplant and other good things! We added a side of steamed snap peas topped with a splash of Blood Orange Olive Oil and a few grinds of black pepper.
I poured tasting portions while dinner was heating. The nose on this wine showed a full, well-balanced wine with notes of black cherry and dark chocolate. It was a beautiful ruby red in color. Upon tasting, those notes of black cherry exploded into a symphony of bold flavor including some dark berries and other flavors that I cannot fully identify. The tannins were silky and the wine had a long finish.
This is a beautiful, versatile wine that is food and quaffing friendly. Do not hesitate to purchase this beautiful red blend of 42% Tannat, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma & Napa), 8% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Merlot (percentages provided by Alice). Tannat is one of Yannick’s favorite varietals. You can pair this wine with fancier, more flavorful foods, and with pizza’s cousin, focaccia, and with everything in-between.
I just looked at the offer on Casemates, after writing my review. This is a screaming deal! Go for it!

08/17/2022 $145

Well a big thanks to Alice and all for sending a wine to the (hot) Lowcountry, but heck it’s hot just about everywhere isn’t it? UPS arrived earlier in the day than the usual route timing so that was a good thing. I’m familiar with the offerings from Rousseau, but I’ve only had his Colombard, and I recall the previous offer on this wine.
Anyway if one was to cut to the chase…observations…bastardized De Long (never used, someone mentioned it the other day) one would say this is a nice, solid, middle of the road (in a good way) wine…tasty, easy going, well made…medium color, ruby, clear, no sediment, aromatic, youthful, dry, medium body, fresh acid, medium easy tannins, fruity not jammy by any stretch, balanced.
Popped at 60°F which was a good place for it, actually we enjoyed it more on the cooler side. Quite aromatic right out of the gate, picked up some earthier notes as the night went on, maybe a little more grip. Finish was maybe on the short side.
I’d say can drink on it’s own but probably likes a little food thrown it’s way. We put a Flannery hanger at it that worked well… nothing but salt/pepper/garlic and a few mesquite chips on the coals. A little starch and green stuff to fill out my usual boring trinity.
Glass or so left for today but not quite up to it yet
Oh, I have to add some useless information, go for the extra glass while enjoying. Tannat is high in resveratrol I learned.
I LOVE ALL OF ALL OF YANNICK’S WINES! Usually it’s an AUTOBUY for me. But sadly, my boxes are stacked five high and I absolutely have no more room for anything in the nice cool basement. Just a couple of weeks ago I had one of his older offered Colombard and it was still great. Thanks Yannick!!

This wine has been very much a go-to for me. Am I about to be a two case orderer?

need to refresh the reds…

Fantastic price for a great “simple” red wine!
By “simple” - I mean it just drinks well. You don’t have to decant and spend time working out nuances. Just drink it!
@WkdPanda I totally agree! Just drink it!

UPDATE
Last night pushed cork back in bottle and into the fridge. Today, the fruit has brightened up a bit, my bride said overall softened up some.
