2015 Bergevin Lane She-Devil Syrah, Columbia Valley
Tasting Notes
Mocha, black cherry and black licorice on the nose. The lush velvety flavors mirror the nose delivering mocha, black cherry, dark plums and blackberries with minerality on the mid-palate and a bold lingering finish with a wisp of black licorice and juicy black fruit.
Whole Berry Fermentation at cooler temperatures creates deep, dark fruit flavors. We go slow with our fermentations, creating smooth textures and darkening the color. The new oak adds bold coffee and toast while the neutral barrels add weight and substance.

Established in 2002 by two friends pursuing a shared dream. Bergevin Lane Winery nurtures wines that embody the truly unique environment of Walla Walla, Columbia and Yakima Valleys and the distinct single vineyards from where the rich terrestrial wines come from.
Our goal is to design wines that are well-balanced, fruit forward and structured so that they may be cellared or enjoyed immediately.
The vision that we share is to create elegant-styled wines that reflect harmony between fruit and oak. Stylistically, we make wines that reflect the unique terroir attributes, while maintaining integrity to the varietal characteristics. Some of our favorite adjectives for our wines include: food friendly, fruit-driven, structured and smooth… And simply put, wines that all can enjoy for any occasion.

@luvbergevinlane
I would love to do that! Was just looking at it on your website. I still regret that my wife and I drove clear across WA from Seattle to Walla Walla on our honeymoon and did no actual tasting in Walla Walla.
As soon as we hit Yakima and my wife saw the “Winery” signs, she started yelling “pull over!” so 6-8 wineries later, by the time we got to our B&B at the Cameo Hts. Mansion, it was too late to do any tasting in Walla Walla. I should have planned for an extra day there but due to lack of proper foresight on my part (and budgetary restraints) we were on a strict schedule to head back West the next morning, along the Columbia River to Portland for the final leg of our trip. We did hit up some Red Mountain wineries on our way out of town though. That’s like, Walla Walla adjacent, right?
@chipgreen Good morning! Next time I would suggest starting in Walla Walla and then tasting your way back! Great restaurants, our downtown is looking amazing as we’ve set up outdoor seating areas with new patios built out into the parking areas. We are surrounded by the Blue Mountains and our vineyards are all a very close drive from town.
In 2006 we took our Syrah offering and put two bottles, each with the same wine on the table. One was labeled Bergevin Lane Syrah and one was labeled Bergevin Lane She-Devil Syrah. People were adamant that the She-Devil Syrah tasted better. We succumbed to marketing. We’re very serious about what is in the bottle! Sourced from two amazing vineyards in Washington State, Stone Tree Vineyards on the Wahluke Slope and Francisca’s Vineyard in Walla Walla!
@danandlisa You are very welcome! We’re very proud of this wine and excited to share it with everyone. We’re gearing up for harvest and will be bringing our Syrah into the winery within the next couple of weeks. It’s a lot of work this time of year but so worth it. The winery smells amazing with the fruit fermenting.
It’s been a long summer here in Sonoma - and throughout I haven’t heard a peep from WineDavid. He hasn’t written, he hasn’t called, he hasn’t texted. I’ve been siting here with an empty glass … feeling… well… really Rhôneley. And then today, out of the blue, a bottle showed up on my doorstep. (Literally, I walked out and this bottle was sitting there. No note, no box, no bag. It was kind of weird). Needless to say, I’m feeling ‘Rhônely-no-more’.
…and I was quite pleased… 2015 Bergevin Lane She-Devil Syrah. I’ve been known to enjoy a Syrah on occasion and don’t get to taste Washington juice as often as I like. I’m not sure about the playful name, but you had me at Syrah. I started digging around for my corkscrew but realized there was no need… screw top. Easy access on a Tuesday night; I like it.
The wine has a nice deep color; it’s fun to look at. The nose isn’t overwhelming, but I get nice notes of baking spice and a little smokiness- though I’ll be honest, that could just be the air. it’s unfortunately a little smokey here tonight.
On the palate: Nice dark fruit that I want from Syrah; underneath, a subtle layer of sweet baking spice, a dust of chocolate and a hint of black pepper. It still has some tannins, but they give way with a little air.
Conclusion: This is a great everyday Syrah; a new-world Crozes-Hermitage-esque Syrah. I’d call it a $30 bottle. The Casemates price is silly. Scoop it up, I say. Be well my friends.
@neilfindswine
Neil has spoken. I was already tempted but Mr. Findswine has convinced me that the She-Devil’s potion is worthy of my soul. Or at least some of my hard-earned cash.
when I saw that image, I thought you’d somehow managed to tie two Roombas together and figure out how to ride it
It does kind of look like that! I accidentally found myself staring at the giphy while listening to Devil Woman from the video further up the page. It’s quite the mesmerizing combo…
@chipgreen I’m up in Benzonia, MI and my son pulled part of a treble hoock out of my right index finger. Luckily, I had a wire cutter in my bag of tools. He left a lure on the picnic table and it jumped onto my finger and out so barb was set. So if any part of your split is left, I NEED 2 BTLS TO GET RID OF THE PAIN!!
Yes, funny that you should bring those up, as how many of us have not found a missing aquaintence, channeling one with a dead battery, on the floor, somewhere in our house? Missing for 20 minutes? No worry, just the mystical experience of someone who made that mistake of not pacing properly.
Who is exempt? Certainly not me, as I found myself doing just that in the early hours of the year 2000. That Roombas didn’t exist then was no problem for me, not at all, as I did so after a New Years Eve party, at a yacht club where I was a guest; thankfully it was after it was over.
The evening started well enough, with hellos to all those you knew, and cordial introductions to those you didn’t.
Good meal, small talk, mingling, then I decided to get a drink. I had already had some, but they were on my host’s account, and I wanted to buy a round that came out of my pocket. I found that this could not be done, so I opted to pay in another way, by making the entire round of drinks payment as a tip to the bartender. I talked to my host, voiced my displeasure about not being able to do as I initially intended, and he said just to put it on his account and we’d settle later; assistant prosecutors can be quite nice when you’re on the right side of the aisle.
Well, as luck would have it, the bartender happened to be an ex-British Marine, who saw action in the Falklands crisis, and somehow picked me out as being prior military. My one shot orders, became a half of a rocks glass, and we had quite a time reminiscing about our experiences.
I should have known, wasn’t thinking, just enjoying. Tie down a bit and an open collar is normal, but me dancing? Damned sure should have known there. Now I can move, quite quicly, quite fluidly, but I avoid dancing, as it might look like some form of combat, yet it didn’t that night. I must say that my partners, must have been good and accomplished, as they moved in and out, spun, and raised/dipped as if I knew what in the hell I was doing. Ladies, my salute, one and all, for being able to make us look/be better than what we are!
Story getting long, but found myself quite comfortable on the floor, like a dead Roomba, after it was all over. I remember saying to myself something like ‘get up, dumb as*’, after about 10 minutes, and chiding myself about it ever after. Looking back, it was fun, but hope I don’t ever repeat it!
Looking forward to trying some of this juice, though.
Hello fellow Casematers (or Casemateys?)! We received an email late in the day we would once again be called upon to serve our duty to the community and rat a bottle of wine! The bottle is set for delivery to my office tomorrow, so stay tuned! We should have a wide range of palates to offer opinions during our socially distanced tasting at the end of the day tomorrow.
Ok! Here is the initial report! We had a total of 6 people at my office try the wine, with my SWMBO as a 7th once the bottle made it home.
The wine was tasted over several hours from Nachtmann Bordeaux glasses.
A quick profile on the tasters:
Rat 1 and 2 are regular wine drinkers, but do not consider themselves very good tasters. They drink nearly anything!
Rat 3 rarely drinks wine.
Rat 4 does not drink a lot of fine but typically goes for a port.
Rat 5 loves wine and makes yearly trips to Napa, and prefers big, young, ripe Napa cabs - think Caymus or Quilt. They do appreciate wines in an old world style, and loves Italian wines as well.
I am Rat 6 and my SO is Rat 7. We enjoy dry reds of varying styles, particularly leaning towards old world. She is the best taster out of the group.
With that out of the way, on to the tasting!
The bottle has a nice looking label and a screw cap closure.
Rat 1 and 2 had the first go, opening the bottle around 2:30pm.
Appearance: Very opaque, dark and looking rich and inviting. Good legs, very slow.
Nose: Initially some good fruit on PnP, definite signs of oak after breathing.
Palate: Smokey and dry, medium weight. Smooth finish, slight lingering alcohol.
Opinion: Not a bottle they would seek out, but definitely drinkable. Estimated cost of $20.
Rats 3 - 6 drank a glass at 4pm. The bottle was closed between tastings.
Rat 3: Definitely taste some smokiness. Not bad, would drink again.
Rat 4: Good flavors, a little too tannic for their tastes. A little bit of alcohol but not bad. Very good for a dry wine, would definitely pick up a bottle if in the mood for a dry wine.
Rat 5:
Appearance: Very dark, appropriate color for a syrah. Great legs, very slow and viscous.
Nose: Smells good. Initially a whiff of fresh rubber, like walking into a DSW (hah!)
Palate: Good flavor, but surprisingly light for a syrah, medium weight.
Opinion: Under $15 and this is a good buy, but not really the style they are looking for.
Rat 6:
Appearance: Nice color, dark in the core and deep red on the edges. No signs of sediment, bricking, or gas. Very long and slow legs. The wine looks great and invites you to take a smell!
Nose: Initial whiff has a fair amount of alcohol and dark fruits. After 20 minutes in the glass the alcohol is gone and getting some dark fruits, maybe plum, and cocoa. The wine smells great.
Palate: Initial pour and swirl, slightly astringent, decent amount of tannins but not overpowering. Not much fruit. Short finish, almost a little flat. After 20 minutes there is noticeable oak but still not much fruit.
Opinion: Decent daily sipper and the case price represents a good QPR.
Bottle was closed and Rat 7 drank a glass at 6pm.
Rat 7:
Appearance: Very dark wine, good legs.
Nose: A little earthiness - stones, and spices.
Palate: Body is medium, medium tannins, smokiness, and the earthiness and spices carry through. Not much fruit. Finish is medium.
Opinion: The wine is OK, and a good price at $11. Not what they look for, but would be a good bottle to open for a crowd.
This past weekend we opened a 2012 Wellington Syrah with dinner of Beef Stew. This wine pales in comparison. My notes are below on CT:
Other recent GSMs SWMBO and I have had include a 2002 ‘The Dead Arm’ d’Arenberg Shiraz and a 2007 Bodegas Mancusco Grenache. We do enjoy Rhone wines and love a CdP. This wine is not any of those.
Bottom line: Good QPR on Casemates, but not a wine we would go out of our way to buy. Everyone would gladly drink it again, so seems to be a good crowd pleaser.
We will taste with dinner tonight of homemade street tacos, and I will update with 1 glass tomorrow as well.
Overall, it is a good deal at the case price, and seems to appeal to a wide range of palates. If we were not so overstocked with wine at the moment we would more than likely be in for a case.
Update with dinner. The wine definitely did not hold up to the spiciness of the Mexican fare. I think it would do much better with a fatty cut of meat as it has some acid to help cut through.
After 90 minutes in the glass the wine seems to be starting to fade, but it was a graceful decline.
@knlprez
Reading over the other reviews, it seems like our bottle had significantly less fruit and depth. I wonder if it was an effect from shipping? The bottle arrived around 11am and was not warm, probably around 70F, so I do not think it was heat damaged…
@knlprez we appreciate your thoughtful and thorough notes. I’m not sure where you’re located but you hit on something that maybe could have had an impact. The Syrah started its journey last week and then was shipped to you. Not sure of the temps during travel on the second leg but even that much movement and no settling time could have an impact. I’m doing a virtual tasting with 60 folks and their SO’s from around the country with this wine tonight so if this offer is still up I’ll share feedback. Thank you again.
@knlprez@luvbergevinlane Oooooh…the age-old “travel shock” debate! I get around it by having such an absurdly large amount of wine that I never need to open a bottle shortly after arrival, except rat bottles.
Typically we do not touch new shipments for 4 weeks, except for rat bottles or if we suspect heat damage during shipping. Not wanting to start a debate, but just curious about the lack of fruit compared to the other rats. If it were just me I would suspect my palate being defective, but we had some pretty good tasters and we were all pretty much in agreement… So… Who knows?
I hope people jumped on the deal, it was pretty good juice for the money and I do not think anyone will be disappointed at the price point offered here.
I am located in Denver and temps have been pretty mild. The bottle was shipped overnight and arrived close to room temp, I’d guess around 70F, so I do not think it was cooked.
Regardless, it was fun to taste with a wide range of experience and differing styles of preferred wines. We didn’t get around to opening the last glass tonight, work got in the way. But I will report tomorrow when it is consumed for consistency and in case the offer comes around in the future.
@klezman@knlprez Include me, should it come to pass…also in Denver, and would enjoy meeting klezman (based on commentary here, perhaps similar palates), and spending more than 2 minutes with knlprez during an exchange!
@CObrent@klezman
klezman, are you in Denver often? I think we could definitely set something up depending on everyone’s schedules. And CObrent and I have traded a lot of wine, but never shared a glass. A situation which should be remedied!
Are you in the LA area? Seems like I remember you posting with that crew. My brother is in LA so we are typically out several times a year, and the same for business travel. Of course, this is not a typical year…
@ampeloquin22@coynedj
Four bottles for each of us sounds great to me! I can place the order, unless either of you get the free shipping (since I don’t.)
@kawichris650 I actually live in South Dakota but get to the Twin Cities fairly often. But, no shipping to SD, not even Pony Express. So, I can’t place the order!
@ampeloquin22@kawichris650 Hey y’all - I also ordered cases of the Andrew Murray and the Maison Louis Latour, in case either of you is interested in a split of those. I really don’t need a full case of each… but I bought them anyway…
@coynedj Thanks for the offer. I also bought a case of the Andrew Murray so I’m good on that front; however, I did not get in on the Maison Louis Latour offer. If the offer is still available I would be interested in taking a few (3) bottles.
@ampeloquin22 Sounds good. I’m hoping to make it up to the Twin Cities the weekend after next, Oct 14/15/16. Assuming the syrah gets delivered by then, I could drop the Louis Latour at Chris’ house (if he’s OK with that) and you could pick up both wines in one trip.
good morning woo… 'Mates! While @luvbergevinelane is dozing I am up and can try to answer any questions you have, while we anxiously await our other Rats!
Last night I realized there was not a food pairing listed so I thought about one of my favorite pairings with our Syrah and was hit with a craving for a juicy lamb burger, grilled with a crust on the outside to medium rare, topped with blue cheese, a Syrah reduction mixed with a tomato puree sauce (ketchup ;-)) grilled onions and a potato bun. Grab a glass of She-Devil Syrah, a couple of napkins and enjoy! We’ve also done this where we fill the lamb patty with the blue cheese. So many options!
@luvbergevinlane Now I’m really hungry – lamb burger for breakfast sounds good to me! (I’m PDT now so still breakfast time for me.) What if someone set up a food truck outside your tasting room selling that?? I’d be there for sure (someday soon I hope.)
For anyone here considering a Wine Tourism trip to Walla-Walla, I highly recommend it. Not just a day or two. I spent a week there and it was just such a great place to visit. It was about 12 years ago. Not just the amazing number of wineries, but a nice downtown; I remember a street faire with sellers of various things. Lots of opportunities for nice walks or bike rides. Got a tour of the Viticulture & Enology program at the college and a chance to buy a case of their “productions.” And I do remember visiting the Bergevin Lane place, which was very friendly (different location; apparently it’s moved now).
@pmarin We moved our tasting room this spring to a new open downtown venue! It’s really beautiful and has a large outdoor patio. We didn’t even know COVID was around the corner but it allowed us to stay partially open when our state opened back up. Lucky timing in crazy times!
You are absolutely right about wine tourism, we have something for everyone. Folks can also go to wallawalla.org to learn more about our amazing region!
@luvbergevinlane@pmarin I would second that motion and reiterate that a few days is just not enough time to fully appreciate what this region has to offer. I journeyed to Walla Walla from the South Puget Sound region a few years ago with the in-laws and a large SUV. We planned a four day trip (four days tasting wine, not including travel time) and mapped out each day ahead of time. Upon leaving, we felt excited about what we had experienced, but sad that we had not planned for at least a full week. Between the sheer number of top notch wineries and producers (old and new) to a selection of truly amazing restaurants, there was just soooooo much we didn’t get to experience.
On the way back home, we cruised through the Yakima Valley and didn’t stop at a single winery as we had already packed the SUV almost overflowing with Walla Walla juice! We’re still planning our return trip and look forward to visiting the Bergevin Lane tasting room, which we missed on the first trip. Oh, and we’re bringing a larger vehicle for more storage! Box truck…hmmmmm?
I do love a good syrah. And I thought the Moonspell cab offered on here a while ago was one of the better values I have purchased from casemates. My oldest son lives in Walla Walla so I am going to try and send him over to the winery this afternoon to taste this offering. Hoping it is available there.
@gtcharlie Hi Charlie - sorry to say it’s only available via Casemates! The QPR is incredible. We are not selling this in the tasting room. Washington State grows syrah really, really well but it’s been a constant challenge to get the word out there to the world! Working with casemates is a great way to meet a new audience and let them experience this for themselves! Not going to lie, the price stings a bit but just like a bandaid - you rip it off and it only stings for a bit! HA!! So, get it while you can! I really appreciate your comments!!!
@luvbergevinlane Had a feeling that might be the case. Thanks for the response. And I agree with you. A couple of days is not nearly long enough to explore the wine region around Walla Walla. Every time my wife and I have been out to visit we have had a wonderful time. As a matter of fact it was just about this time last year we were out during the harvest. Wish we had a chance to stop by Bergevin Lane.
@gtcharlie Christie our wine club & tasting room guru is manning the station today and would LOVE to see your son. She may not have this wine there to open, but he can try a few other things and get an idea of what we’re all about. Please send him by!!
@luvbergevinlane@tastebud Yeah I have to say that seeing a Syrah from two designated vineyards in Walla Walla valley and Wahluke slope (basically two premium areas for WA wines) at this price seems truly amazing. I’m sure there is a story of how this came to be, but maybe not one you can tell us (supplier agreements and all…)
I’m guessing at 2015 vintage, these should be ideal now, but fine to cellar for a few years. What do you think?
Also curious about 100% Syrah – a lot of the WA Syrahs blend 1-2% Viognier; curious about how common that is, and whether that’s something you normally do or not? Thanks
@pmarin@tastebud Great questions. We’ve had long term vineyards contracts with both of these vineyards. Both were planted in 2001 making this vintage 15th leaf! We have done many coferments with Viognier and our Syrah but this year there was a late freeze in 2014 so we did not have a Viognier release in 2015. We love what 1-2%Viognier can do to aromatics and a bit of complexity. Folks say that viognier locks in color but our Syrah is so inky dark we do not find that makes a difference when we coferment. In regards to cellaring we think 8-10 years with the vine age will work fabulously! I tend to like them at 5-8 years. That’s just personal preference.
@luvbergevinlane@Winedavid49 Well a case his been ordered. Getting my twenty two year old son motivated to visit your tasting room has proven more challenging. I am sure he will do it at some point. Working at Passatempo right now which I am sure you are more than familiar with.
Due to shipping licenses that definitely is always something we’re reviewing, unfortunately we can not ship to CT but we could get it to NY? Any friends there?
@luvbergevinlane Understood - CT is not the most business friendly state including for wineries. Thought about shipping to UPS facility in NY but will sit this one out as have plenty of inventory at the moment!
I was lucky enough to receive an email from Alice yesterday evening that I would be ratting… but the hard part would be to get a review up ASAP, as the wine would be going on sale today. I promised I was up for the challenge.
UPS dropped off actually as promised- 9:30am central. Unpacked a bottle of 2015 Bergevin Lane She-Devil Syrah, looking forward to this! The wine was actually slightly chilled from the truck(nice surprise) so I let it sit on the counter for about two hours to settle- before cracking the screw top and pouring.
The wine has a nice deep, dark garnet color, almost opaque. Gave it a swirl, and it clings nicely to the glass. Looks almost luscious in the glass. Just a hint of a nose- some cherry and other dark fruits and maybe chocolate.
First sip- nice dark fruit, plum, and a touch of black pepper. Has a slight mineralogy, and finishes juicy, with a bit of licorice. It has a nice mouth feel that makes me to go back for more. Decided to pair it with a bit of Milano salami and a goat manchego ( what was in the fridge) the salami paired nicely, bringing out the fruit and a hint of tobacco. The cheese did nothing for it really. Oh well!
Let a glass sit for a bit. As it warmed up the fruit comes a forward and more of the licorice/tobacco flavors emerge (in a good way).
Decided to stop and revisit at lunch, which was a leftover pork made into a carnitas burrito. Wine hit on all cylinders. This is a wine you could drink on its own and definitely pair with a good meal.
Looking at the pricing I would say this is steal, and I will be buying a case. Just need to find somewhere to put it… sorry for being a bit long winded, but it was a pleasure and thanks for the opportunity!
@jshaver Thanks for the awesome review- We agree and think this is a no-brainer, but we might be just a bit biased!!! I’ve always thought this wine went great with food- we don’t use a lot of new oak and so the bright acidity is there to pair up with food, no big chewy tannins to compete with!
And hey , BTW , that is one fancy-shmancy glass; she says as she looks sadly at the go-to 45-yr-old water tumbler… (I always use it - my mom bought it with green stamps!)
@jshaver The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words really falls apart when the topic is wine tasting. I know others disagree, but I don’t see the point of posting a photo of the bottle or its contents for rat reports.
In any case, thanks for the informative report!
Most rat reports these days have (imo useless) photos that (imo) just take up space.
I respectfully disagree. I personally believe pictures with thoughtfulness and intent help others to imagine what it might be like to experience the wine and give them additional insight (combined with a thorough review of course.) Perhaps that’s just me?
At the very least, I can recall numerous occasions when stock photos were used on this site (and the old one) and people requested actual photos of the bottle that they’d be receiving.
Worst case scenario, how difficult is it to scroll past some photos? If there was an actual issue with space, I’m certain someone from the Casemates crew would provide guidance if determined necessary.
Your comment is the first I’ve seen against photos being included with Lab Rat reports. However, if it turns out this is a common and shared opinion amongst Casemate-ers, I’ll willingly make an effort to keep photos to a minimum if/when I’m selected to review a bottle.
We’re all here for the same reasons after all. We appreciate great wine at great prices and we like making informed decisions when buying said wine. That’s what has always made this place (and the old one) superior to any other wine buying platform, imo.
@kawichris650 Agreed. (Except about the part where a photo or ten has any bearing on my interest in a wine.) And I especially agree on the need for lab rats to be thoughtful - something I strive for when I get the nod.
And if I’m being totally honest, the anti-photo thing is probably just annoyance at the whole forum system here. It’s terrible.
And if I’m being totally honest, the anti-photo thing is probably just annoyance at the whole forum system here. It’s terrible.
I agree this system/format has its downsides, but it’s what we’ve got and that’s definitely better than nothing.
As you well know, @chipgreen has been very honest about this forum system in the Site Tools Thread and many others have shared their frustrations as well. Despite @chipgreen 's best efforts, I think he eventually came to the conclusion that what we’ve got is what we’re going to get.
Is it perfect? No. But it gets the job done. Many of us are running out of space to store wine and we’ve got @Winedavid49 to thank for that haha. Regardless of this forum’s limitations.
@jshaver@klezman I like the pictures of the actual wine and the label(s). It’s waaaay better than the often off-topic gifs that typically litter the comments
@jshaver@Xenon@kawichris650
Yup. This forum system is what we’re stuck with, but with any luck tptb do listen and will think about improvements over time. I just wish that it was better so that many of our wooter friends would still come by these parts and chat like the old days.
The giphy thing I also find incredibly annoying, which is probably also why I find other extraneous (to me) images in the forum annoying as well. It’s something the meh crowd brought over here with them. Shrug.
@jshaver@klezman Actually regarding photos, I definitely do see a value in them. Especially on white wines where we see everything from pale straw to darker amber colors. Given the style of the wine and the age, this can give a good idea of how the wine will taste and its aging potential, or lack thereof. In a red it is harder, but still, I’ve found photos have influenced me one way or the other to buy or not, i.e. “this LOOKS like I would like it.” Not as good as being there, but better than mere words.
EDIT Oh yeah, and the giphy thing for order numbers, I didn’t get that either at first. But yes I do it too and sometimes it’s entertaining, or prompts further discussion. I think most of us are still in our houses and come here to buy cases of wine we don’t need and also have some fun discussion, maybe sometimes not exactly on-topic. If there is move to make this a pure-business-only minimal text wine buying site, then I think that’s fair, but I’d probably spend less time here. Which might be for the better because boxes keep showing up.
After that amazing Moonspell Cab offer earlier this Summer, Bergevin Lane has elevated to “no-brainer” status in my book. I split a case and my half is long gone, thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. I have learned my lesson…this case is all mine!
Without having tasted this wine yet, I would think the QPR is off the charts as I have numerous bottles of Walla Walla Syrah from these exact vineyards…some of which I paid over $50/bottle.
@CraigDanger well… my wife is from Holland and their idea of licorice is completely different. Dozens of kinds, but even the “black licorice” is very potent, and not at all like that sweet corn-syrupy chewy thing we grow up with in the US.
I’m not saying it’s easy to like either – definitely an acquired taste. But if you think of the underlying spice flavors, that’s the flavor element mentioned here as a wine taste – it’s just hard to recognize as in US licorice it’s so muted and covered by icky sweet gumminess.
@winesnob Definitely. What’s more, though, this wine is not just Columbia Valley (a fairly broad designation), but from two vineyards in what are basically primo areas.
EDIT read a few posts down for winemaker story behind the Walla-Walla portion.
For anyone on the fence, here are links to previous Casemates offers (albeit a cab) from this same winery.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and @luvbergevinlane has always done a great job at participating in the discussion and answering any questions.
Bottom line: This is great wine from a stand-up winery.
21% of this fruit comes from a vineyard called Francisca’s Vineyard. We make a reserve vineyard designated Syrah from this. It’s called the Princess Syrah. 2014 vintage was 91 points Wine Advocate. This vineyard is Live Certified and Salmon Safe. We did not make a 2015 Princess because there was a freeze late 2014 that got the fruit. So all we brought in and crushed went into our She Devil. Fun facts.
Syrah is one of my favorites. And awesome winemaker participation in the community makes this an easy buy. Excited to try it!

@jlim13 Thank you - this is a great Fall wine, will pair with everything from a friend & a fire-pit to a big holiday feast… delicious, easy to drink and priced to share!
Love the Bergevin Moonspell, and down to 2 bottles. Our wine budget was hoping this was a sellout by now, but our hearts are glad there was still a chance to pick up a case!
Cracked the first bottle for SWMBO’s pre-bday, and wow… i’ve never nosed a wine that smelled as much like meat as this. Not smoked… raw meat in a good way, kinda like fresh lamb with the herbes de provence rubbed nearby. On the tongue, solid Syrah dark fruits with the expected semi-flat, modest-lived impression… a bomb of flavors, but the nose is the standout. I don’t think it is smoke taint, doesn’t come across as smoke or oak…but meaty yum in spades. where’s my lamb chop?

Hi everyone! Looking forward to an awesome offer!
Anyone know where this wine got its name?
VAN MURALS! GROUND SQUIRRELS! SPIT CURLS! AWESOME!
@luvbergevinlane
You gave it to her?
Sorry, do tell!
@chipgreen To hear the full story you’ll have to visit us in our new downtown Walla Walla tasting room!
@luvbergevinlane
Alternative tangential music…
@chipgreen oh how I laughed at the Young Ones
@melmains
Think I still have VHS tapes of that show!
@luvbergevinlane Thanks for being here so “early”. I am grateful for this site where lovers of wine (me) get to talk to and learn from the creators.
@luvbergevinlane
Only a She-Devil would pull a stunt like that! Nice work.
#PotentPlaceboPotion
@luvbergevinlane Marketing worked, but I’d have been fine with either representation!
Best of luck!!!
@CroutonOllie Agreed, we would have too! Thank you!!!
Working late, participation, what’s not to like?
Hey Woo…; err… Casemates!
@neilfindswine thank you for taking the time to give our She-Devil Syrah a taste! Stay safe!!!
@neilfindswine P.S. We may need to steal your line, “feeling really Rhôneley”! We’ll give you credit for six months!
@luvbergevinlane Permission granted. I like your wine, and I know I’m not aRhône.
@neilfindswine
Neil has spoken. I was already tempted but Mr. Findswine has convinced me that the She-Devil’s potion is worthy of my soul. Or at least some of my hard-earned cash.
NE OH, anyone want in?
/giphy dizzy-plucky-martini
@chipgreen Chippy!!! How are you my friend? Hope you’re fairing well these days, glass in hand…
@chipgreen @neilfindswine Already did, for the short offering, but would be in for more if it filled the set!
@neilfindswine
Doing well! Hope you and yours can say the same. Please stay safe, so sorry to hear about all the devastating fires.
@CroutonOllie
I kinda figured you were the one to light up Cuyahoga County on the map.
@chipgreen Yes, told myself I was done for awhile, but a long winter is coming on!
I really need to weigh space, and economics, or face the inevitable consequences that come with a lack of self discipline!
@CroutonOllie
I am already living them. Also, I can give you the number for LifeStorage. First month is free!
@chipgreen Thanks, we live and learn, but we’ll be fine; you’ll see.
A bit far from you, but if you need anything, just say. I have no space for wine, though
@chipgreen Sure I’ll take a pair or whatever shakes out in a split.
@chipgreen @neilfindswine when I saw that image, I thought you’d somehow managed to tie two Roombas together and figure out how to ride it
@chipgreen @pjmartin You can count me in on the split too. WTH…it’s only $!
@neilfindswine you never know when the winegods/goddesses will secretly show up. Thanks for the very entertaining review.
@neilfindswine @tastebud
@Boatman72
Yikes! You’re in! At least that is not as bad as my BIL’s BIL who got one stuck in his eye. I cringe just thinking about it.
@Boatman72 @chipgreen Sounds like you needed bourbon!!!
@chipgreen @neilfindswine @tastebud
Roomba. Roomba?
@CroutonOllie @neilfindswine @tastebud
Sounds like you had quite a night!
@chipgreen @neilfindswine @tastebud
I did, thanks, and I think most have would enjoyed the time, if not to end up like in the state I put myself into!
I’m sure you’d have fit right in, but maybe not paying homage to the floor like I did
Hello fellow Casematers (or Casemateys?)!
Until then, goodnight!
@knlprez
My notes are below on CT:
https://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=2418304
Thanks for the opportunity to try the bottle!
@knlprez
Update with dinner. The wine definitely did not hold up to the spiciness of the Mexican fare. I think it would do much better with a fatty cut of meat as it has some acid to help cut through.
After 90 minutes in the glass the wine seems to be starting to fade, but it was a graceful decline.
I will update tomorrow with the last glass!
@knlprez
Reading over the other reviews, it seems like our bottle had significantly less fruit and depth. I wonder if it was an effect from shipping? The bottle arrived around 11am and was not warm, probably around 70F, so I do not think it was heat damaged…
Excited to see how it’s doing tomorrow!
@knlprez Thank you and the 7 rats for the insightfuls reviews. How fun.
@knlprez @luvbergevinlane Oooooh…the age-old “travel shock” debate! I get around it by having such an absurdly large amount of wine that I never need to open a bottle shortly after arrival, except rat bottles.
@klezman @luvbergevinlane
@knlprez next time we make it to Denver we should get a drink
@klezman Sounds like a plan!
@klezman @knlprez Include me, should it come to pass…also in Denver, and would enjoy meeting klezman (based on commentary here, perhaps similar palates), and spending more than 2 minutes with knlprez during an exchange!
@CObrent @klezman
klezman, are you in Denver often? I think we could definitely set something up depending on everyone’s schedules. And CObrent and I have traded a lot of wine, but never shared a glass. A situation which should be remedied!
Are you in the LA area? Seems like I remember you posting with that crew. My brother is in LA so we are typically out several times a year, and the same for business travel. Of course, this is not a typical year…
@CObrent @knlprez Yes, we’re in LA. Not in Denver often (we’d have shared glasses by now!) but might be there more often.
@winedavid49 @jrbw3 @kasandrae @KNmeh7 hey WD, give us a break will ya?!!
@ttboy23 oh, wait we had one…last offer, no Pinot for me-o
@ttboy23
Most definitely in. No surprise to you, I’m sure.
@luvbergevinlane, I don’t even want to tell you how many bottles of your cab we’ve consumed. And Syrah is my jam!
@jrbw3 Thank you!!! This will not disappoint!
Anyone in the Twin Cities area interested in a split?
@kawichris650 I’m in!
@kawichris650 Do a 3-way split?
@ampeloquin22 @coynedj
@coynedj
I placed the order
/giphy awkward-vulgar-nutmeg
@ampeloquin22 @kawichris650 Hey y’all - I also ordered cases of the Andrew Murray and the Maison Louis Latour, in case either of you is interested in a split of those. I really don’t need a full case of each… but I bought them anyway…
@coynedj
Your SIWBM is holding strong I see!
@kawichris650 And yes, holding strong except for some short bursts of indulgence. You OK with the arrangement I suggested for ampeloquin?
OK, I’m in.
/giphy spotty-obedient-cookie
Unfortunately, my coupon code was not recognized. Hopefully Customer Service can help.
good morning woo… 'Mates!
@luvbergevinlane @pmarin I would second that motion and reiterate that a few days is just not enough time to fully appreciate what this region has to offer.
@Allieroon @pmarin maybe consider a small trailer! LOL!!! kind of joking, not really.
@gtcharlie yep, QPR for sure with these wines. I’m a fan of what Annette is doing up there.
@luvbergevinlane @tastebud Yeah I have to say that seeing a Syrah from two designated vineyards in Walla Walla valley and Wahluke slope (basically two premium areas for WA wines) at this price seems truly amazing.
Thanks
@pmarin @tastebud Great questions.
@gtcharlie @Winedavid49 David you snuck in here! Thank you for your support!!!
@luvbergevinlane @Winedavid49 Well a case his been ordered. Getting my twenty two year old son motivated to visit your tasting room has proven more challenging. I am sure he will do it at some point. Working at Passatempo right now which I am sure you are more than familiar with.
@gtcharlie @Winedavid49 Fantastic restaurant downtown Walla Walla!
I’m in, love the giphy name:

@rpstrong Well if that’s a lethal kitten, I think I’ve chosen
@rpstrong OK I am in too … that kitten massage looks pretty good.

Enjoyed the Moonspell Cab but looks like CT has dropped off the list of ship to states?
Pics of wine, for some reason I couldn’t get them into the review!
OWLS! TOWELS! JOWLS! AWESOME!
@tastebud thanks! Thought the glass showcased the wine well - not my daily drinking vessel though!
@jshaver The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words really falls apart when the topic is wine tasting. I know others disagree, but I don’t see the point of posting a photo of the bottle or its contents for rat reports.
In any case, thanks for the informative report!
@klezman that is fair. I just wanted to give a reference for color and legs.
@jshaver @klezman
Especially if it’s not on a white/neutral background.
@jshaver Thank you for drinking during the day for the report. We had a “devil” of a time getting this wine out. Much appreciated.
@jshaver @WCCWineGirl
@WCCWineGirl anything for casemates!
@jshaver To be clear - not a dig at you at all! Most rat reports these days have (imo useless) photos that (imo) just take up space.
@klezman
@jshaver @klezman Takes up space? Is the internet full? I paid the bill last week.
@michaelvella
I literarily lol’d. Thank you and keep it up!
@klezman
@jshaver @klezman I like the pictures of the actual wine and the label(s). It’s waaaay better than the often off-topic gifs that typically litter the comments
@jshaver @Xenon @kawichris650
Shrug.
@jshaver @klezman Actually regarding photos, I definitely do see a value in them.
@klezman I think there’s a way you can disable loading of images in your browser, that might be a good work-around.
@klezman @pmarin
In Chrome;
Settings > Advanced > Privacy & Security > Site Settings > Content > Images > Turn off “show all” or block individual sites.
@jshaver @pmarin Agreed on the point about white wines. I hadn’t thought of that.
After that amazing Moonspell Cab offer earlier this Summer, Bergevin Lane has elevated to “no-brainer” status in my book. I split a case and my half is long gone, thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. I have learned my lesson…this case is all mine!
Without having tasted this wine yet, I would think the QPR is off the charts as I have numerous bottles of Walla Walla Syrah from these exact vineyards…some of which I paid over $50/bottle.
operative macabre credit
Dang, you got me again! I’m splitting with family members, cuz my wine fridge overfloweth.

@DebRVA Family Split!

In for a case: as others have mentioned above, we enjoyed the Moonspell-Cab too Thanks

@PLSemenza Great to hear! Thank you!!

Can’t wait!
Black Licorice? No thanks

Columbia Valley is legit. Don’t think I’ve had a Syrah from there. Specs and price look good on this one.
Cab offer from December 2nd, 2019
Cab offer from June 6th, 2020
@kawichris650 thank you!!!
Fun facts.
@luvbergevinlane Ahh this explains a bit more about “how this came to be.” Definitely Fun facts.
@luvbergevinlane hopefully your rose makes an appearance in time for Thanksgiving
In for 4
@losthighwayz Hi there! I don’t think we will have enough rose for a Casemates offer but we do have an online webstore! http://bergevinlane.orderport.net/wines/Linen-Wines
Sure. Why not?

Syrah is one of my favorites. And awesome winemaker participation in the community makes this an easy buy. Excited to try it!

MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
Don’t regret later- buy now!

The price … the region … the good words from winery and rats alike … couldn’t pass it up!
/giphy parasitic-enchanting-dingo
Love the discussion and Lab Ratports, Rats did a great job on this offer.

@slinger42
Oh man that sounds like a syrah I would love!
@slinger42
You’re drinking it!
