I’m just going to get right to it. We received this bottle to Rat almost a week ago (thanks, Alice!) and didn’t waste any time after chilling to pop it open.
Gorgeous pink color. The nose presented with, well, peach. Only peach. No complex bouquet detected. Initial tasting brought… more peach. After some vigorous swirling to help bring the temperature up and hopefully open up the flavors a bit, some nice strawberry was added to the prominent peach. This rosé is not at all sweet but stops short of dry.
We brought out a variety of meats, cheeses, olives, chocolate & crackers. The only thing that really complemented this rosé was a fresh mozzarella. Anything with a stronger flavor - tangy, salty, sweet, umami - just overpowered the wine.
Having said all that, we didn’t dislike this wine. It was crisp and somewhat refreshing. Just not a wine to have with dinner. A pretty good standalone drinker. The case price in this offering is very reasonable.
@winedavid49 is there any forecast of the ACTUAL ship date? I will be out of town for about a 2 week period, and it’s hard to know if these will ship in a month, or in the next week. I decided to pay for the UPS premium, but they’ll only store a week max. I’ve had times when I just left town and then panic when I get the “your order was shipped” email.
Even better would be a way to say “store and ship after XXX date” – I think many of us would even be glad to pay extra for climate-controlled warehouse storage until some preferable time. I know many people hold off on ordering over the Summer months just for this reason, so miss those deals.
When we received this bottle of wine, I was intrigued by the color as a Pinot Noir Rose. This is a very delightful bottle of wine. Not as crisp as I imagined. The wine had a subtle hint of dryness, but not overly fruity either. We started drinking this wine as a simple quiet time evening event. Then added some cheese and crackers. That seemed to enhance the experience and overall flavor of the wine. I would say this bottle was a perfect wine for a nice fall evening. Not quite crisp enough as a summer refresher, but not dry enough to drink during a heavy meal. Although, it would probably pair well with a light fish dinner or salad.
I’ve been a fan of Charles Smith since early 2001, when a friend recommended K Syrah (now you’ll have that song in your head all day!). His tasting room - single car garage in Walla Walla. His mark in WA wines is legendary - from his Fruit Bomb to $150 Syrah’s, just everything he touches is at least likable to drop-dead fantastic!
I’m very curious about his source for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - can’t find the mentioned Evergeen vineyard - certainly not in Walla Walla!
The article is from 2013 and mentions that the PN was removed (would have been around 2012), though it does mention chardonnay and a reference to someone working for Charles Smith wines. So there is some connection there for sure.
So that still is a mystery, maybe not ALL the PN was removed, or else maybe some was replanted?

Yes, Charles did a monster replant of PN on there - his site claims that it is the biggest block of it in the state.

Tasting Notes
Alluring color draws you in. Shimmering pale pink suggests that cherry blossom, apple skin, and golden plum come juicy and layered. Watermelon rind, rose petals, and star anise take you on a long ride to a delicious and mouthwatering finish.
Vintage Notes
The 2019 vintage was on the cooler side as it started slow with later-than-usual bud break and continued on to be fairly moderate throughout the year. Some vineyards had issues with an October freeze a bit earlier than usual, but our high-elevation vineyards have great air drainage which allows us to extend the growing season late into October without freeze. This yielded fantastic ripening and some awesome wines with incredible balance and character. Overall, we are excited about the wine produced in 2019, which has brought us more finesse, incredible flavors, and lovely balance.
