Has the community developed a consensus on what is (un)acceptable when splitting?
3I haven’t had a lot of splits, and therefore have not developed a group of friends, but I am curious what are some of the prevailing customs.
For example, shipping. I would assume most that are buying cases are paying their VMP dues to be eligible for free shipping; does anyone ever include this in the cost of split, whether paid or not. (I never have, and am on the monthly dues plan.)
This has not happened to me, but how does one decide the value/cost/chance to split a rare or one-off bottle when sharing?
How do people pay? I am a fan of cash. Always have been, always will. I understand if someone wanted to venmo (etc.) as a good-faith payment on an expensive case, but otherwise, if I meet you in person to exchange bottles, just hand me cash. (Preferably not one-dollar bills from your recent serving shift, but I did ask for cash…)
Is rounding up something people do, or do they actually collect change? I feel if someone orders the entire case, they are entitled to the 99 possible cents from rounding up versus change (this is per order, not per bottle).
So, casemates, what do you think?

For splits PayPal or venmo is great.
I usually round to the nearest dollar for the split to make the math simple.
I don’t typically pay the buyer for wine until the wine trades hands. That makes it so there are no hard feelings if your bottles get consumed or just never get to you.
If you are part of a larger group who splits make sure you share the cost of buying on occasion.
And lastly if when you all meet it’s mostly bottles trading hands back and forth and not cash then you’re doing it right.
@CorTot interesting comment about bottle trading.
@CorTot @chipgreen
Ditto on what Chipgreen says above, and ditto on what CorTot says about settling up when wine is delivered.
Most of our NE OH splits have gone very well…and there have been a shit load of them. I’m sitting on maybe half a case that I bought that is supposed to go to a few outside of our regulars. If we never meet I’ll just add it to my stash so no big deal.
As us regulars have determined this splitting stuff is working out pretty well- getting lots of great wine at great prices thanks to @Winedavid49 and the input from trusted rats takes away the risk of going into multiple bottle purchases blind.
Cheers!
I’m on the monthly VMP plan and have never added anything for that to the cost of bottles but pretty much everyone I split with is on the same plan so it’s not like I’m shelling out extra for shipping when they buy. If I have a coupon, I let everyone save equally per bottle. Whatever my per bottle price is, that’s what I ask for from my 'mates.
I used to round up (or down) to the nearest dollar to determine the per bottle price but noticed others were adding the exact total and then rounding just that final amount so I started using that method as well.
Everyone I have split with so far has paid in cash but I would not be opposed to Venmo, although I don’t yet have the app. I still feel that Casemates should provide tools for splitting and paying for those splits but it appears that my previous post about Casemates Site Tools fell upon deaf ears with @snapster and @dave , so… maybe they are off enjoying a nice Carribbean cruise with some of the $120,000 that was raised?
@chipgreen, @mrn1, @pjmartin @HopHeadB NE OH Peeps rule!!! Never met a bad Buckeye!! Beware though, they’re not Nuts!!!
In the splits I have been involved with (as “buyer” and “requestor” I have often used PayPal to receive/pay. I have also received cash on delivery. I am currently holding bottles for which I have already received PayPal payment and others for which I will receive cash on delivery. So far the level of trust has been excellent.
So far all had been cash on my end. Most recently, we had issues of finding the right time to get together and wound up having a 2 person relay. Worked out very well, and is very kind for someone to pay for your share.
Here in Central MD, we have a great group going. Payment is usually cash on the barrelhead, but I’ve accepted a (gasp) personal check for an unusually large shipment (from 3, if I recall correctly, offers). Never had any problems, unless you count being significantly overpaid once (since corrected on a later split.) People here seem to round down, and insist on that, so I’ve been doing the same. Great folks; great (usually) wine.
Baltimore ROCKS!
@kls_in_MD Agreed! I love my Casemates!
