2021 Marchelle Old Vine Family Cuvèe, Mokelumne River
Tasting Notes
Some of the oldest vineyards in the world thrive in the Mokelumne River AVA between Lodi and the Sacramento Delta. The Bechthold Vineyard is indeed the oldest Cinsaut planting in the world, struck on its own roots in 1882 and farmed organically. Nearby, the Royal Tee Vineyard was planted in 1889, comprising 82% Zinfandel, 8% Carignan, and the remainder a mix of Flame Tokay, Black Prince, Mission, and Muscat table grapes. The majority of this blend is Carignan from the “1900 Block” of Jessie’s Grove, which includes 10% of the almost extinct white grape Monbadon, also known as Berger. All of these vines are own-rooted, dry-farmed, and certified heritage vineyards.
Moderately dark in color, this wine presents a complex nose with dark fruits, earth, and hints of woodruff. The palate presents well-sculpted tannins supported by a good acid backbone that leads to a long, lingering finish echoing the fruits first found on the nose.
2021 Harvest
The 2021 Vintage was extremely dry and cold, with frosts during the early growing season. The resulting harvest was very light, with less than half the crop expected on many vines. Harvested from early September (Zin) to early October (Carignan).

2020 Marchelle “1900 Block” Carignan, Jessie’s Grove Vineyard, Mokelumne River, Lodi
Tasting Notes
Carignan has long been known as an excellent blender in its native Rhone Valley in southern France. On the sandy floodplains of the Mokelumne River west of Lodi, these dry-farmed, own-rooted vines planted in 1900 by the Spenker family and are still farmed by descendant Greg Burns of Jessie’s Grove. As with many old vineyards, the Carignan has a few scattered white grapes and other varietals interplanted. The rapidly disappearing but late 19th-century widely planted Monbadon white grape comprised 8% of the rows picked. Head-trained, spur-pruned, and own-rooted/dry-farmed.
A fruit-forward expression of dark cherry, plum fruits, freshly roasted coffee, wildflowers, and a hint of “sauvage et animale” wildness. With forward tannins and plenty of structure, this wine will take its time to mature and evolve.
2020 Harvest
2020 was a trouble-free vintage along the edge of the Sacramento Delta, allowing for both the 90% Carignan and the 10% almost extinct white grape Monbadon to ripen to perfection. A tiny amount of Alicante Bouche and Flame Tokay were also picked into this ancient field blend.

2020 Marchelle “Royal Tee Block” Zinfandel, Jessie’s Grove Vineyard, Mokelumne River
Tasting Notes
This ancient vine Zinfandel hails from the 133-year-old iconic “Royal Tee Block" at Jessie’s Grove Vineyard in the Mokelumne River area of Lodi California. Originally planted in the midst of 320 loamy, oak-studded acres by pioneer Joseph Spenker and named for his daughter Jessie, the property is now farmed by Greg Burns, Spenker’s great-great grandson. Here, tradition holds; deep roots are venerated. Zinfandel with a field blend of Black Prince, Flame Tokay, and Mission grapes. The last jewels in the treasure chest are ancient Carignan vines. Each contributes a distinct element for the alchemy we strive for in this unique Zinfandel.
Ethereal spice aromas derive from this mélange of Zinfandel, Carignan, Flame Tokay, Black Prince, and Mission grapes. On the palate, you get pinot-like smoothness and flavors of layered plum, dark cherry, and spicy pumpkin with just enough spice to remind you that this is still a Zinfandel.
2020 Harvest
The 2020 vintage was exceptionally dry, allowing for these ancient vines to mine for their water without the disease pressure that typically afflicts old-vine head-trained, spur-pruned vines. The traditional table grapes, done in carbonic maceration style, lended acid and balance to the wine.

2020 Marchelle “1900 Block” Carignan, Jessie’s Grove Vineyard
Had the pleasure of ratting the 1900 block — we got it on short notice and already had restaurant plans tonight, so we opened it for an aperitif and didn’t get to try it with food. We don’t see much carignan on its own without blending around these parts, and I’d call this one of the best examples of the species that I’ve met, at least in my limited experience.
Beautiful garnet color, not much on the nose, but damned interesting from the first sip. Mrs. Z had strong initial impressions of plum and vanilla, which I don’t disagree with though perhaps found them less pronounced than she did. Both of us noticed pronounced tannins and acidity — exactly what you’d expect of the grape.
We diverge a bit from there. I found it kinda funky and mushroomy on the back of the palate — to me it screams “Fall wine.” I thought it really wanted to pair with something like a stinky French cheese. Or maybe wild rice or something hearty like that. She thinks I’m full of it, and would rather chill it a little more and drink it with shellfish. Since we had a big dinner ahead of us, this dispute will have to go unresolved for now. But we’ve saved a couple glasses worth in the bottle, so I’ll try to report back tomorrow on both how it’s progressed and what it does with whatever we eat then.
Bottom line: this is a great bottle, especially if you like something a little off the beaten path. Best analogue I can offer is Clark Smith’s beautiful St. Laurent from a couple years back. Much like Clark’s best work, this is one that will make you think a little.
Not gonna lie, I kinda wanted not to like this wine that much since we just bought a case of Laura Michael. But Mrs. Z really likes it, and we’re suckers for an offbeat varietal that makes us scratch our heads. Waiting to see what rats say about other two bottles, but if the quality of this one is representative we’re certainly gonna be in for at least a three pack.
Clark is a good friend of ours, I will have to have to go and do a side by side tasting with him! Thanks for the support, this is easily the best price that you will see on the wine so I recommend buying it while the deal is on. Cheers, Evan
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: tax and shipping are not included in savings calculations.)
Marchelle Wines Old Vine Mixed Reds - $55 = 19.63%
Considering these are usually $39 and up the real savings is huge especially when you buy a case. It is a pretty cool way to enjoy California history in a glass. Also, a great way to share fine wine with friends and family! Cheers, Evan

Working now to get you your badge to make you more identifiable
@rjquillin Hey there, I’m Evan Damiano Winemaker for Marchelle Wines. Greg and I work hand in hand to deliver wines of balance and nuance. When I’m not in the vineyards or cellar I also occasionally do outreach and tastings. Still figuring out different platforms and technology so bear with me to get that grape badge.

Thanks for joining in!
Participation here is most always a plus, and you may get some follow-up questions even now that the sale has ended.
Glad we can expose you to a nuanced wine! Every year the Monbadon is fascinating to work with as it needs to be hand pressed just before the carignan goes to barrel. The grapes are so gelatinous they don’t press down in our standard grape press.
WE on the 2021 Family:
88 points. This is a balanced red, offering notes of red cherry, boysenberry, red currant, chocolate, fresh fennel, cut wood and forest floor. — Stacy Briscoe 12/31/23
VinePair (Keith Beavers)? on the Family:
91 points. The Marchelle winery is named after winemaker Greg La Follette and his partner Kevin’s significant others Mara and Michelle. The winery is a testament to their enduring friendship, and represents a new chapter in La Follette’s winemaking journey. They source from cool climate, sustainable vineyards and make wines with meticulous attention to detail and a sense of place. This wine is made with old vine Carignan and an almost extinct variety called Monbadon. It’s bright and lively with a fruit-forward nose. The palate has dense fruit notes and great acidity that leads to a lingering finish. 2/26/24
@kaolis Ok , a short note from lodiwine.com, Randy Caparoso, who was tasting through quite a few wines and categorizing them according to style. The 2020 zin was in the “Light- to medium-bodied styles with negligible oak” category.
From Lodi’s oldest Zinfandel block (planted in 1889), yielding flower petal-crinkly, refined sensations with almost Pinot noir-like silkiness, and exquisite, flowery red fruit fragrance (strawberry/cherry/raspberry) tinged with tea-like spice and faint loamy earthiness. 9/28/22
Monica and I had the pleasure of trying the 2021 Marchelle Old Vine Family Cuvèe. We paired it with a Flannery New York Strips. We made a gorgonzola sauce with mushrooms.
The wine was quite fruit forward on the nose. Notes of cherry and black currant predominate. The first taste was quite jammy, and that had me a little concerned. However, it immediately settled down into a smooth melody of flavors. The palate continued with the dark fruits. Black cherry and light plum were nicely balanced with the acidity allowing the fruit to be present but not overwhelming. It paired nicely with the steak. Allowing the flavors of the steak and sauce to shine, while complementing it quite nicely.
I am a huge fan of Caragnan. I think that the addition of it to the Zinfandel balances it quite nicely. There’s some hints of pepper from the Zin, but well integrated in the wine. It’s interesting that this wine uses multiple varietals and integrates them well.
This is a definite buy for us. I wish that it was a 3 pack of just this wine, but will buy nonetheless.
Happy to hear that you love our family cuvee, it was so much fun to blend and tweak. I really love honoring the growers with this delicious wine. If you ever want to come out and barrel taste please shoot me an email Evan@marchellewines.com.
Labrat reporting for duty! Sorry, no pictures today…
I was ‘gifted’ a bottle of the
2020 Marchelle “Royal Tee Block” Zinfandel, Jessie’s Grove Vineyard
by the good folks at Casemates.
Drank with my beautiful wife over two nights while watching Blue Bloods the first night and the Dodgers beat the Tigers the second.
The wine is a beautiful bright ruby with good depth to the color.
Nose is restrained, some red fruit and herbs, fairly complex.
Great texture on the palate- a bit of an oily (in a good way) mouthfeel and very fine tannins, almost a bit ‘dusty.’ Very complex wine, definitely a “thinking” wine. My wife and I kept stopping the show to talk about the wine, mostly really sophisticated comments like “wow, this is really good!” This reminds me a lot of a Clark Smith wine- super balanced, super interesting, makes you think. Lots of spice, some restrained plum fruit, getting some espresso, long finish. I’m not sure I could have picked this out as a Zin. (Now I see it’s really more of a field blend which makes perfect sense.)
Night two was just me tasting, 24 hours later, the bottle had been corked and left in the wine cellar. Still really great, now the fruit has come out a lot more in a mellow and “wide” sense on the palate, still a long finish. I opened a 2012 Wellington Estate Zinfandel after this last glass of Marchelle, and it was strangely similar in a mellow and beautiful way.
So Clark Smith on night 1 and Peter Wellington on day 2. Not bad!
I’ll cut to the chase- this is a great bottle of wine. I was hoping for a case of this at a price of sub $15/bottle, and then my plan was two order two cases before I posted my labrat review to make sure there was no chance of a sellout.
With three different wines in the mix and sub $19/btl case price I’ll have to think on it, maybe read the other labrat reports, but I might do it just to get 4 bottles of this Zin.
Thanks for the great feedback. This is the best price that we can offer on any of these wines which all usually sell for around $40/a piece. Also, thanks for sharing about your wonderful dinner with your wife. Please come by and taste whenever you want. Cheers, Evan
@MarchelleWines Evan, we will take you up on that on our next wine trip! No complaints about the price, especially for such low production, wines, and I’m looking forward to trying the other 2 wines in the case.
If anyone is in SF drop me a line, I ham happy to come visit and do more tastings in the city, or feel free to come up and barrel taste with me Evan@marchellewines.com. I must say, this deal is really incredible, and a special one time price for casemates!
55 & 77 cases man that is tiny.
Read the labrats and due to the uniqueness of these wines and the history these will definitely be making it into the Christmas box o’wines for the kids. Always looking for something unique to put in.
@forlich We recently bottled a 40 case run of 104 year old Charbono. It is a privilege to work with these old vines, but sometimes it is hard to market something so rare! It makes me so happy that you are sharing this with your family, for us at Marchelle sharing the special moments with a special wine with special people is what life is all about. Cheers, Evan@marchellewines.com
Thanks @MarchelleWines for the added comments and participation. That’s a great thing about this site. And I love the chance to try unusual varietals and small-production wines.
@pmarin Glad to share, if you are ever up in Sebastopol feel free to drop me a line. I’d be happy to barrel taste with you. Evan@marchellewines. Also, thanks for the Orangutan it makes me smile.
