Moving wine
0We are moving soon, about two hours away. We have a modest collection of wine in wine coolers (about 300 bottles). Movers will relocate the coolers, but we will transport the wine ourselves. It will be a few days before the coolers are in place and cold again. I have styrofoam cases. Questions: do I put the wine in the cases straight from the coolers? Standing up, on their side or does it matter? Any tips or other advice are appreciated.

When I moved from the Far North to a little less Far, I rented a U-Haul just for my wine and a couple of racks. It was January, the coldest day of the year, about -20F. We moved about 1000 bottles, and it went smoothly. I think wine in bottles is far sturdier than we fear. Good luck, and may you find a unicorn to enjoy in your collection.
@FritzCat How did you move the wine? In boxes?
@Twich22 Yes, most were moved in original wine boxes, many of which had styrofoam inserts. It was about a 3-hour drive.
This time of year, even in FL, you don’t really need to worry about it. Put the bottles straight into cases from the coolers unless you’re worried about condensation on the bottles that would weaken the cardboard.
Don’t do what our movers did a few years ago and load the wine first into the truck so it’s last out. On the hottest day of the year in SoCal. Lost a few bottles of wine from that.
@klezman Damn!
@FritzCat I mean, none of it was really their fault, per se. The wine boxes were in the way of many other things, so they had to go out first and we didn’t tell them otherwise. We’d already scheduled the moving date not knowing it was going to be 105 degrees. We didn’t know the movers were going to take an hour-plus lunch break after loading up the truck, though, before arriving at the new place, which was all of 3 miles away.
@klezman Still…Damn!
