My husband and I are expecting our first baby early April. We’re looking to purchase a couple case of wine that we can drink through the years and save a bottle or two until the kid is 21. Any ideas?
On my 21st birthday I shared a 1971 Margaux with my dad. He obviously bought it a few years after I was born but had cellared it for many, many years. It had quite a bit of sediment but I remember the day with great fondness and great clarity. Every now and again I’ll have a wine that takes me back to sitting on the brick patio with my dad and memories come flooding back. You might want to look into wine futures for some big reds that will stand up to a good bit of time in the cellar.
Congrats! Suggest you wait until 2020 “birth year” vintages are available and stash some of those away.
Are you looking for 2 cases of a single wine to taste over the years and then celebrate their 21st with them?
Maybe a nice sparkling or a Napa Cab. I am partial to Howell Mountain Cabs myself. Not inexpensive but they generally have very good aging potential. If you like dessert wines, Sauternes wines can go for decades.
Mazal tov! Our second just showed and our first was born in 2016. 2016 happened to be a great year for Port, so we’ve got a case+ of that to lay down 20+ years for him. Also some Corison will be coming eventually, and at lease a case from the winery bearing his name - all age-worthy wines. We also got some good German Rieslings, which are usually easy candidates for extended ageing.
For 2019, not sure yet which regions will have the best options, but certainly we’ll get some Corison.
If you want your 2020 baby to have 21+ year old wines you need to look to well-structured (i.e. high(er) acidity, moderate to higher tannin) versions of:
-Napa Cabernet
-Bordeaux
-Burgundy
-Rioja
-German Riesling (maybe Finger Lakes/Niagara, too)
-Dessert wines (Port and icewine primarily)
-Rhone and Rhone-style blends from around the world
First of all what kind of wines do you like to drink? Since you want to drink them periodically for the next 20 years and there’s a chance your child might not enjoy wine when they are 21.

Depends on your tastes and budget…

I applaud starting early. Trying to backfill after a decade is proving difficult for me.
I was very intrigued by this thread until the most recent garbage spam lol @rjquillin
