New UPS Stinks
4While the redirecting of the new UPS works for some people, it sucks for me. I am on vacation this week and my lovely wine from WIneSmith shipped early. My closest pick up place is an 1.5 hours from me and UPS will not let me change the address, even to my neighbor. They will only change it to places that are far from me. I hope my neighbor can catch the brown truck.

Yeah, the surprise early-shipping this summer was messed up. A couple of times, the shipment was bumped up to a week when I was out of town.
I hope your neighbor can flag down that truck.
@danandlisa you could use a vacation hold I think
@Twich22 I wish. Third time is a charm. Hopefully tomorrow.
The nightmare that is UPS.

After contacting customer service 2x previously about why the package is not getting delivered, I get a call today from UPS. I got into a heated… discussion… with the lady who called, over this package that the driver simply refuses to drop at the UPS store. She claimed that the shipper will not allow an address change. I argued that it is not an address change, it is a hold at location for pickup. She said “it’s the same thing”. Back and forth we went until I finally agreed to try to get @WineDavid49 to call them to “release” the package.
10 minutes later, she called me back and apologized, blaming the driver for not dropping it at the access point. This is not the first time this has happened. A previous attempt to redirect to the same UPS store resulted in much the same treatment. The package rode around town for the better part of a week with probably the same driver who would not leave it where it was designated to be left. Eventually it ended up back at the hub, which I only found out after contacting customer service. When I went to pick it up, I was given the same song and dance about the shipper not allowing the package to be redirected.
@chipgreen Wow, that’s horrendous. And how far did you have to go to pick it up at the hub?
@InFrom
It’s 90 minutes round-trip through rush hour traffic.
(Pickup window is 4-7 pm M-F only)
@chipgreen @InFrom Holy crap
@chipgreen yea, ups has been getting worse and worse. Best case scenario my wine takes a few extra days to get to me after riding around for a while.
1st world problems I guess hah. Imagine, we’re complaining about how terrible the shipping of alcohol direct to customer has gotten. But fedex was 100 times better.
@chipgreen sucks big time. My customer center is convenient (10 minutes away) but the hours are utter crap (10am - 2pm). Gah. At least it’s getting cooler so that i can maybe have things delivered to the house. When it was 100+ a few weeks back that was a non-option.
Had a close one just now, that turned out well. I missed the driver ringing the bell, or better to say, I rang the buzzer for the door downstairs a little too late, and got the dreaded missed delivery notice. Very bad b/c I probably won’t be around next week to pick it up from an access point. I ran downstairs and amazingly, found the truck parked around the corner. The guy was more than happy to hand it over to me. Halcon is mine!
I agree UPS sucks for delivery of wine, compound that with inaccurate estimated delivery dates on the offers and it makes it hard to hit the buy button.
Amavi and Halcon offers both had estimated delivery dates of 11/2 11/3 but Ups delivered on 10/21. I was 142 miles away at the time but since I’m currently living in a little town of 500 population and the UPS driver lives in town I have his personal cell #, I called him and said when you get to my house call me and I’ll unlock the door and you can set it inside. He was fine doing that but if he wasn’t a local resident that would not be happening, those orders would have been heading back.
@rc70
THAT is exceptional service, if only we all could have that luxury.
@rjquillin
Definitely above and beyond level service. But if he wasn’t a tiny town local guy I sure wouldn’t be remotely unlocking / locking my door for a random delivery driver.
@rc70
Or giving Amazon access!?
Can’t even believe some actually do that.
Just open my door and put them inside.
Naw, don’t think so.
@rc70 @rjquillin yea, I really wish I could just sign for it online and they could leave it at the door when im not home. Is there a law against this or is it just policy?
@rc70 @rjquillin @Twich22 Not sure with alcohol if there is a law, but I did that years ago with Fed Ex. I can’t recall now if it was a wine delivery or another package that needed a signature, but they had a form to fill out and then that authorized them to leave it. It was great to save me the hour round trip drive, but the problem was there was no easy way to flag a delivery that I didn’t want to sit on the porch. I believe I’d have had to revoke that permission in time and then fill out the form again.
Edit: I believe the same form let you designate preferred location to leave it and also authorize to leave with a neighbor. This was at my old address though, so that was 10+ years ago.
My favorite is when they’re suddenly unable to deliver it to a UPS Access Point that I’ve picked up from in the past, say they’ll contact the receiver (me) with an alternate location, and then return it to sender without ever notifying me.
FWIW, I’d pay double the current subscription fee if it meant having my choice if shipping provider!
@Lidio That is quite the generous offer, seeing as how you have been subscribing for 3 months.
@Lidio
I’ve had the same problem with my last 3 purchases… the first is being sent back… the other 2 I think I caught in time. I’ll find out tomorrow… very frustrating!
Not only does the new UPS stink so does the old UPS!
@ScottW58 sorry, but really , every carrier Stinks right now.
@ScottW58 Yes it does.
@ScottW58 @Winedavid49
I know that USPS is also experiencing delays but haven’t heard of FedEx having problems right now?
@chipgreen @ScottW58 @Winedavid49 Yes, FedEx is very definitely having problems right now.
I haven’t heard this in quite a while. So how about we just blame Corrado.
Not sure how/when the pic got changed, but how appropriate.
@thumperchick
@rjquillin It is the Swedish spelling
For the flip side of “I didn’t answer the door so they sent my wine back” (but also stinky), last night I woke up at 1am to take a leak, checked my phone and saw a message from Casemates that my package had been delivered at 10:38pm. I quickly went to the door and yep, there was my case of wine, sitting outside on my front porch in 19F weather. I dragged it in and went back to bed, opened the box this morning and everything’s okay, though the bottles on the bottom are still very very cold. I would have been really upset had my wine frozen!
@ilanarama Imagine if you had been buying wine from WCC for almost 15 years. That would REALLY piss you off. Then, imagine you gave them money to start this business with promises. Just imagine…
@ilanarama At least 19F isn’t likely to actually freeze wine.
@klezman true that. But it got down to 14 for a few hours, might have at that rate. And nighttime temps in single digits are not uncommon here (Colorado). It just made me a bit nervous!
Half the time here UPS is just leaving it at the door here.
@kookie00 Wish they would here. They just leave me the dreaded no one here note, even though I give my driver wine and am here.
My Cheer From Over Here case will likely be sitting on a UPS truck tonight in 10 degree weather. Was supposed to be delivered today. Are there any signs of freezing other than pushed out corks? With screw caps that won’t be an issue. I guess breakage becomes more of a concern? Any negative impact to flavor, texture or longevity of wine that was previously frozen?
@hscottk While the picture showed a screwcap, these are closed with cork.
@pjmartin Thanks for the info. We’ll see what the corks look like when they arrive…supposedly today.
@hscottk @pjmartin If it’s truly extra cold and the wine was never cold stabilized then you might get extra tartrate falling out of solution. I don’t think that would ruin the wine.
@klezman @pjmartin Did receive package today and no protruding corks. Looks like we caught a break here with the brief cold snap. Thanks for your input!
UPS package (not from WCC) out for delivery, to a business closed on Saturday. No way to redirect to a nearby ‘access point’
Call me grumpy and give me FedEx.
@rjquillin I’ve been volunteering a family member who’s normally home to accept for me, love my UPS guy but I know he’s slammed and I’m not always home in his 530-6pm delivery window to receive wine. Hate if he has to lug it back to the truck and I miss him!
