Vintage and Winemaker Notes
2018 Signature Selection Rosé, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
A Long Tradition of Rosé
When it comes to appreciating this style of wine we have it down to an art. We have been producing rosé since 1954 and have more than 60 vintages under our belt. We look for a style that captures the essence of fruit and is crisp and a touch spicy. The grapes for our Rosé were harvested from the Pedroncelli home ranch. The site’s well-drained rocky soils, hillsides and excellent microclimate enable zinfandel to develop generous fruit flavors.
The year brought mild temperatures and a longer growing season with optimal results in the grapes. The vineyard blocks chosen for our Rosé were picked on the 5th of September to preserve acidity, obtain lower sugars and highlight varietal flavors. The result is excellent quality with an intensity of aromas and acidity. Once destemmed and pressed, the juice is transferred to temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for a slow fermentation. The fruitiness of the zinfandel grape lends rounded and balanced flavor in the wine. Bottled a few months after harvest, the wine captures the freshness of the vintage.
The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. Since then, four generations of Pedroncellis have weathered Prohibition, wine booms and busts, and changing tastes. And they’re still a family-owned operation making acclaimed premium wines. Wherever you are now, Sultan of Swat and Silent Cal, this next glass is for you.
Yes! Still have a bottle set aside from last time this was on here. Delicious, not too dry, not too sweet. A bit more complex than the NXNW rose, but still super approachable. Autobuying!
ETA-Oh, that’s a different one from this winery. Hmm. a bit more acidic based on the PH, but given how good the previous one was… Still going for it, maybe one case vs two though.
A bottle arrived this afternoon with almost zero notice - WCC emailed me literally 5-10 minutes before FedEx knocked on the front door. Thankfully we were in town. Later I made a grocery run while out and about to pick up some things to pair. We started with a PNP directly from the fridge (it chilled for about 7 hours after arrival) then moved onto some food pairings, a.k.a. Lab Rat Dinner.
Overall
A pretty simple summer sipper with a flavor profile that doesn’t change much when paired with a variety of different foods. At <$10/btl it’s a pretty typical Pedroncelli value - not the greatest QPR of all time in my book, but a solid deal.
Nose: Smarties (the candy) according to my better half, some mild hints of strawberry to me
Taste: Strawberry on the front, followed by a very tart/crisp finish on the back end
Overall not a terribly complex wine but definitely refreshing, with good acidity.
Food Pairings
I grabbed a bunch of cheeses to go along with some meat and crackers we already had on hand for a small charcuterie board. Knowing typical rosé pairings, I also bought some sushi and some shrimp.
As noted above, the most striking thing with all the pairings is how little the flavor profile changed across different foods. The wine either went well with the food (even when the food’s flavor often masked the wine itself) or was decidedly not a good pairing.
Cheeses:
Extra Sharp Cheddar - good, got a hint of cherry with this
Pepper Jack - good, cut the creaminess nicely
Maple Smoked Cheddar - good, nothing noteworthy
Smoked Gouda - ok, nothing noteworthy
Bourbon Bellavitano - ok, nothing noteworthy
Alp Blossom - ok, somewhat bitter finish
Parmesan Reggiano - bad, way too bitter
Snacks/Sides:
Dolmas - very good, cut the lemon / starch from the palate really well, clean finish
Salame - good, brought out some brighter fruits / cherry
Pickled Brussels Sprouts - good, brought out some floral notes
Garlic Quinoa Brown Rice - bad, way too bitter
Mains:
BBQ Shrimp - good, flavor of the shrimp overpower the wine some but the pairing itself was perfect
Tuna Sushi - good, minimal flavor from the wine but no off notes
Salmon Sushi - ok, not as complementary as with the tuna
Shichimi Togarashi Shrimp - ok, wine cut through the spice some but the flavors of the food really overpowered the wine
@sdilullo You lost me at Pickled Brussels Sprouts. After recovering for several minutes I finished your fine report. Well written and well illustrated.
@losthighwayz@sdilullo
I have gone through about four bottles of the last (similar) offering, and one was fizzy. Not quite Bartles & James, but off-putting…

Hey Kids–
Just popped by to say hi. This is the 65th consecutive vintage of this wine for us. Always made from Zinfandel grapes, it’s the perfect summer sipper (but worry not…it’s a great Thanksgiving wine too!).
Most often when asked what I’d pair this wine with my answer is simply “A glass!” Though I have found that it also pairs wonderfully with coconut macaroons-- “with a little chocolate drizzle, where the coconut is tender and the chocolate is dark. Lovely” (said in a Billy Crystal voice) I also like this wine with oyster shooters (a little ponzu in the bottom, a dob of wasabi–of course this was at an ocean-side, open-air restaurant in Maui.
I had it at home last night with a simply grilled pork loin chop, some stir-fried bok choi and sweet red peppers. Light fare is this wine’s friend.
Hope all are enjoying their summer and hope to see you around the ranch soon!
Cheers,
Ed
@pedroncellifam Thanks for stopping by, Ed (and for the Princess Bride reference;) I don’t drink a lot of rose but I know that they don’t have a long shelf life. Given your extensive experience, how long do you think this will this wine stay fresh? Will I still get the delicate strawberry aromas come this time next year?
@KitMarlot nice get on the PB ref! What I’ve learned in my 15 minutes in the biz is that the strawberry in this wine actually becomes more prominent as the wine ages. It almost takes on a strawberries and cream aroma. The acid will calm down a bit, but the wine is easily drinkable for a couple of years after bottling (2-3 from vintage) We Americans are waaaaayyy to hung up on vintage dates. Julie and I are enjoying some 2014 and 2015 “crisp white wines” we purchased from a retailer friend. The wines are delightful and then we notice they are a few years old. My recommendation would be to buy several cases and drink a bottle every two weeks for 3 years! (6.5 cases by my math)
Not sure why I frequently get creepy weird order confirms… (malignant-auspicious-family), but love anything Ped. In for a case of summer quaffing.
Cheers!
Sorry for the delay of this review. Life kind of got in the way. Picked up the bottle from Fed Ex around 5 last night and put it in the fridge hoping for a quick cool down. My son in law offered to taste test with me, although he only drinks beer so keep that in mind.
I poured us each a glass and I got a lovely strawberry note on the nose. He smelled wine. The first taste was barely fruity but we both agreed it was too warm. After more time chilling we tried again. To me it was dry but with a good balance of fruit and acid. It was crisp with a little spice. He thought it would make a good sangria. We both preferred it really chilled which is strange because I like my whites to not be super cold. After a few glasses he stated the wine got better the more he had. For a non wine drinker he considered that a compliment.
I really enjoyed the wine, even though I don’t drink a lot of rose. Not super complex but an easy drinking wine. To me it would be a great porch pounder on a summer evening or chilled in an ice bucket pool side to sip on while floating. Overall another very nice wine from Pedroncelli!

@Jamileigh17 Ahhhh, but this is the 2018.
That ~other~ bottle is some “old” 2017.
Bet they’re both quite tasty, and the tariff, well done WD.
@Jamileigh17 that was really good stuff… This looks significantly different, but I have a positive view of the brand and it’s rosé season

Well done! Nice food porn, too.
@sdilullo That is some serious dedication - Salute!
Any carbonation on this one? I remember encountering carbonation with the 2015 or 16 which turned me off. I do appreciate Pedroncelli overall though
@losthighwayz None observed in our bottle. Still as a midsummer’s night.
@sdilullo thank you! When I shook the 2016 bubbles would form at the top of the bottle. This is great news.

It’s Pedroncelli. Buy it.
I haven’t started in on my 2017s yet! I guess I’ll pass this time around given my overflow situation.
