Styrofoam - Smith Devereux Red Blend
1I just received my order from Smith Devereux and it was shipped using styrofoam as the packaging material. Given what we know about how impossible it is to recycle styrofoam I now have them on my do not buy list (ps the wine is good value for the price). Please post if you change as I am enjoying the wine.
Casemates is there anyway we can know in advance if a non-recycled component is used in shipping - I know it a bit much to ask but it kills me to see a whole garbage bag full of the stuff.
Anybody else feel the same?

I believe all shipments will be in styrofoam for the duration of “summer shipping”.
@karenhynes @cfhudson
I think there are many of us really appreciate the styro, not only for shipping during hot/cold times, but for storage as well; especially if one does not have a proper cellar. Not only does the styro help buffer rapid temperature changes, it stacks much better than the pulp packaging.
@cfhudson @karenhynes @rjquillin Yeah, I have several of them stacked in my closet, as I can claim neither cellar nor wine fridge. If ya can’t recycle, reuse, amirite?
Well your grandchildren’s grandchildren’s grandchildren’s will still be able to use it. Just please don’t throw it away
@cfhudson Never! I promise.
I think the styro is crucial this time of year. I had a couple of boxes spend a day on the ground in St. Louis the beginning of this month for no darn good reason, and when they were delivered two days later they were not noticeably warm.
I like the styrofoam packing for the same reasons as @rjquillin.
It might not in up in the landfill, depending on your trash pick-up service, it could be recycled by their sorting system. See this YouTube video: Recycling Polystyrene and Expanded Polystyrene
@cfhudson, the Alliance for Form Packaging Recyclers (AFPR) has created a mail-back option, as well as drop of locations http://www.epspackaging.org
It also works better for long term driving. I had boxes of both types when my kids were here and bought wine in Temecula. S-I-L picked the styrofoam for better packing in the car and for the heat issues mentioned above.
we appreciate your concerns and position on the subject of styro. we use them during the summer period for the reasons mentioned above.
@Winedavid49 If people are sufficiently concerned, you could offer the highly discouraged option to forego the styro, maybe in conjunction with the 2-day air shipping option.
@klezman
Because you want your wine in a hot delivery truck for a day not to mention loading and unloading the airplane?
@ScottW58 I sure as hell don’t. But if a customer is willing to waive any recourse for screwed up wine why shouldn’t they be allowed to take on the risk?
@klezman @ScottW58 I agree with klez, casemates should offer a summer risky shipping option At a discount. Shipped in loose bags stuffed with a months worth of junk mail.
@CorTot @ScottW58 Even better! Call it the “I don’t know why I even buy wine” version at that point.
@CorTot @klezman
Haha my only problem with the whole thing is the winery ultimately loses, somebody gets a cooked bottle who doesn’t know a cooked bottle from a corked bottle and just thinks they make bad wine.
@CorTot @ScottW58 Agreed that’s the biggest risk, and the best argument for not allowing it.
If the purchaser cares that much you could do a super-duper-express upgrade with paper bottle protectors and use the next day by noon option. If people want to pay that much for it, the deal is killed, but hey…it’s their money.
Yes, this gets more and more absurd.
@CorTot @klezman @ScottW58 Glad you three got enjoyment from the thread
@cfhudson @CorTot @klezman
Not sure if I should say thank you or you are welcome?
@cfhudson @klezman @ScottW58 I’ve never contributed positively to a conversation…
@cfhudson @CorTot @klezman
positively is a matter of opinion. But my opinion might not count
@CorTot @klezman @ScottW58 Both Thanks for the thread I enjoyed it … and you’re welcome for the opportunity to get so creative.
Food for thought - there is always “door #-3”.
I once worked with an ‘Ecological Worrier’ (I had to have that explained to me , but now I’m Woke) you could always buy ‘Carbon-Offsets’ for the Styro, then when the wine showed up, gift it to the hard working recycling persons near you, probably be a big hit.
I mean there are those of us who ‘take care’ of our Fed Ex delivery people, right??
YES, always take care of the FED-X driver, it works. On hot days (when my Casemates is on the last leg of it’s journey) he adjusts his route and shows up 2-3 hrs early
Worth mentioning on this forum is our core belief when devising the idea of Casemates is that sharing/splitting has a lot smaller carbon footprint than shipping 2,3,4 separate packages in 2,3,4 separate packages.
