Risotto is a labor of love, speaking of the instapot I made an instapot risotto with saffron tonight. It really does a great job and takes the labor out of it
@bunnymasseuse
Apologies for the delayed reply! It was lovely. I was out and chatting with some folks so not paying super close attention, but I’d say, it has a nice plush mouthfeel and overall dark fruit profile. Clark describes it as drinking blueberry pie. I totally get how he could say that.
Went to a wine dinner recently featuring wines from NE Ohio. We were honored to be joined by @pjmartin, @marikar and their better halves as well as some friends of @marikar.
The event took place at an interesting venue - Spire Institute - an intensive (and sprawling) sports training and events venue.
The evening started off with a drone racing demonstration and a sparkling Rise of Pinot Noir from Laurello Vineyards.
Our first course was a delicious Charred Red Pepper Soup with roasted red peppers, sweet vidalia onions, carrots, leeks and Russet potatoes. This was paired with a 2017 Silver Crest Cellars Cabernet Franc and a 2019 Grand River Cellars Rose of Cabernet Franc.
This was followed by a dessert tray with various items such as chocolate fudge brownies, macaroons, chocolate truffels, limoncello cookies, etc. paired with an award winning 2017 Ferrante Winery Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.
Coffee was served and an invitation was made to our fellow guests to join us at our hotel for a mini after-party but we were brutally rebuffed and forced to open a bottle of 2013 Gramona Penedès Gessamí by ourselves.
This Spanish white was an interesting blend of 40% Muscat de Frontignan, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Gewürztraminer and 5% Muscat of Alexandria. Slightly off-dry, it was better than expected.

@chipgreen@winedavid49
So this has now been open, fridge, no Ar, for a few days. If you can at all appreciate a Chard with a bit of butter and just a touch of oak this is squarely in that wheelhouse. Not a style I normally think I’d like, but damn, this is tasty at 11 years.

@pseudogourmet98
I’m generally not a huge Chard fan, but at the case price I couldn’t resist. So far, I like it! It’s pretty crisp…not a hint of the butter that usually puts me off. Pairs great with the calamari!
@bunnymasseuse@karenhynes
Happy to hear that about the IH chard. I am in the same mind frame regarding Chardonnay. I drank way too much oaky buttery stuff in the 80’s when I was young, then stayed away for a long time. Easing back in in the last decade. Looking forward to this.
Still catching up… last weekend was my birthday. Wifey treated me to dinner and a one-night staycation.
We checked into the Embassy Suites in time to have some wine before dinner. Opened a bottle of 2009 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir La Bauge Au-dessus (which translates to “Wild Burgundian Party Upstairs”) as a belated R.I.P. to Jim Clendenen who passed away on May 17th at age 68.
The owner/winemaker and “Mind Behind” Au Bon Climat was also an Akron native known for his generosity and participation in local charity events & wine dinners.
Went to Delmonico’s Steakhouse for dinner, where I had the double-cut 10 oz. filet mignon with a slab of truffle butter on top and garlic mashers on the side. A glass of Duckhorn Merlot paired nicely with the food.
Later, we celebrated my birthday and the fact that we are closing on a house soon, with one of our absolute favorites…
@hscottk@ScottW58
Damn that looks tasty, those Dico are very nice. They’ve kept me from breaking into the single vineyard bottles but not for much longer

@klezman@ScottW58 I wouldn’t say it makes any dish like a pro chef with a fully stocked kitchen can but on a weekday in a pinch it makes pretty tasty stuff. My go to is a pot roast in there.
@CorTot@ScottW58 Oh, I love the instant pot! I do lots of short ribs and lamb shanks in it. Pulled pork/carnitas/etc, too. If you do bone-in cuts then the sauce is extra delicious. We also do the “perpetual sauce” thing where any leftover sauce is used for the next round and it just gets better and better over time.
A Belgian style quad ale that I picked up at Idyllwild Brewing Company last weekend when I was camping over there. You definitely notice the 10.2% alcohol…but it’s only 40 IBUs!
The second course consisted of Crab Cake with blue point lump crab pan fired in clarified butter, remoulade sauce and shredded slaw. This was paired with a 2016 Markko Vineyard Homage Chardonnay Grand Cru and a 2019 Debonne Vineyards Unoaked Chardonnay.
The third course was a Chicken Piccata - sauteed boneless chicken breast in a light lemon caper sauce and Pan Seared Atlantic Salmon Filet with dill sauce, Potatoes Anna and Roasted Broccoli. This course was paired with a 2017 Buccia Vineyards North Coast Riesling and a 2018 South River Vineyard Malbec.
@kawichris650@ScottW58 We were discussing it - it’s literally never happened before unless we were travelling. The pieces fell into place, so we took the option!

@hscottk@karenhynes
It’s kinda funny, had this tonight with some roasted chicken and cauliflower, broccoli, truffled mac & cheese and some sautéed mushrooms and onions; quite the mix, all leftovers, but it was the chicken and cauliflower from the notes that made me giggle. Had not remembered the suggested pairings.
Absolutely not a malo-oak-butter bomb, nor a crisp un-oaked bottle. It straddles, but clearly tends to that ‘gentle mouth feel’ of the notes. Went well with the supper selection, but I’d really like a bit more crispness. Solo, as a cocktail, I think it would appeal to a wide audience. Haven’t yet head back from those that got a bottle.
Am I happy with the case? Absolutely, as some were tagged as gifts and I’m quite sure they will be well received.
@chipgreen I didn’t love the previous 2005 and this was similar. Just lacks the smoothness and ancillary flavors I would expect. The 2007s are much better.
@CorTot
Thanks. I had 1 of each, haven’t opened the 2007 yet. I thought the 2005 was wound pretty tight. It still had some good fruit but the tannins took over in the mid-palate and didn’t let up.
@klezman I haven’t seen any, but I will let you know if I do! Maybe you can find a Goldbelly discount?
Their production kitchen and a takeout branch are pretty close to us. We sometimes get takeout from them, but it’s fun to stretch the noodles at home. The kit results are excellent.

@FritzCat Got a bunch of 2016 Ports for my first kid since that’s his birth year. These should be good for his 50th. I’d love to be able to share it with him then!
@chipgreen
Considering I had little idea what to expect, it’s not bad. I really need to find another Vermentino to compare to; perhaps a Bailiwick if I can find one of them. Still loads of fruit, this was mostly melon with some citrus, but somewhat lean on acidity at this point to make it a good food bottle. Not sure if it’s always been that way, or just softened. It worked with chicken pot pie yesterday and some white fish tonight, but a bit more zing would have helped out.
At the beach house. Made 2 batches of Sangria last night, one White and one Red. For the white I bought a 1.5L of some cheap dry white Aussie labelled wine type substance. For the Red, I used two bottles of QPR Select, one from the old batch and one from the new batch. I also had to use Jameson’s to kick it up a notch because I couldn’t buy Rum or Brandy here in NC, where it’s a sin to buy booze on a Sunday, and church and state are apparently strongly co-mingled. Oh, and I sliced up a huge Strip of beef, which was grilled over charcoal, served with some Artichokes and various other sides. Note: have you ever noticed that artichokes seem to mute the flavor of wine? Any other foods affect the flavor of wine?
@rjquillin
Still enjoyable, but I’d suggest drinking them if you can find/access them. Obviously YMMV, but I don’t think they will improve with any additional age.
@hscottk I should label the outside of mine. I should have some 2017 and 2018 as well, but it’s a crapshoot since I can’t tell until I get the cork out.
@hscottk@radiolysis@rjquillin I’ve quite liked the TJ’s Brut Rose 2-3 years after release. Didn’t intentionally age them, but we bought enough of them that it happened. They do add some complexity with a couple years in bottle.
Sorry Chicky from Burley Oak, keeping it local to cheer on the C-A-P-S, CAPS CAPS CAPS! Thought a Downeast Cranberry Cider was too close to the enemy despite being red….

@ScottW58
It’s this magical limitation of finances prioritizing certain things above others. As much as it royally SUCKS, I have to abide by it.
I had nearly 14 years invested with my employer and Covid ruined that.
However, I remain optimistic nonetheless. Wine helps.

@chipgreen I didn’t love the previous 2005 and this was similar. Just lacks the smoothness and ancillary flavors I would expect. The 2007s are much better.
@rjquillin I believe so.
@CorTot
Thanks. I had 1 of each, haven’t opened the 2007 yet. I thought the 2005 was wound pretty tight. It still had some good fruit but the tannins took over in the mid-palate and didn’t let up.
@chipgreen that’s a good description. I’ll see if it evolves overnight.
@chipgreen I have to say this was better day 2.
2008 White Oak Vineyards & Winery Syrah
Going to make some spicy noodles.
2002 Robert Hunter Brut de Noir
@klezman Small world! We just polished off some spicy cumin lamb hand-ripped noodles, from a meal kit. Drinking 2017 Foxglove Zinfandel.
@InFrom Sichuanese meal kits!!! Oh dear…
Do they have referral codes that get us both free stuff?
@klezman I haven’t seen any, but I will let you know if I do! Maybe you can find a Goldbelly discount?
Their production kitchen and a takeout branch are pretty close to us. We sometimes get takeout from them, but it’s fun to stretch the noodles at home. The kit results are excellent.
@klezman
One of my all-time favorites from LB. I still have 2 of them stashed away.
2018 pedroncelli cab franc with roast beef poboys tonight
@sillyheathen
Well, that looks pretty delicious!!
@karenhynes it wasn’t too shabby. It was a four napkin poboy.
@karenhynes @sillyheathen
@karenhynes @ScottW58 @sillyheathen
Gotta love po’boys! We’ll be in NOLA in about 10 days. My mouth is already watering.
@karenhynes @pseudogourmet98 @ScottW58 nice. I got to fly home for the first time in two years a few weeks ago. I’m hoping to possibly go back again this summer.
2013 Castelli del Grevepesa Chianti Classico Clemente VII Gran Selezione. Super tasty.
@CorTot @klezman
So, do we want to do a 3~4 way split on this one?
@klezman @rjquillin I do not.
Wife wanted this, so we’re having it: 2020 Icardi Moscato d’Asti la Rosa Selvatica
2015 Peterson Mendo Blendo with burgers.
2015 Woodlands Margaret
@chipgreen
Looks like a fine, and well overdue, unmasking event!
2016 monte antico supremeus toscana IGT
@bunnymasseuse

2018 etude pinot gris
@bunnymasseuse
@bunnymasseuse yep 2001 “Wellington Weekend with friends” Reserve Syrah Sonoma Valley Magnum !
(A bit of cork pop on this but no damage!! Half cork broke but kept the rest together on exit)
DeNegoce OG n.44 Rutherford cab. Really nice with a 4 hr decant. Followed by TJs Brut Rosé. Not a bad way to spend a cold, rainy afternoon in the northeast.
2010 Ty’s Red, still going strong.
Gotta buy today’s offering.
@FritzCat
@rjquillin
Just tagging you because it looks like Ty needs his grape badge (unless this is an impostor haha).
@kawichris650
While an exceedingly lackluster showing, he got his grapes.
2015 Windgap PN Woodruff. Went nicely with white pizza (mushroom).
2018 Wilde Farm Halcon Vineyard Syrah - BD purchase - nice peppery syrah - good probably do with a bit more aging
Nothing but the best
@ScottW58 One more week! So looking forward to it!
@rjquillin, if you want to come up and join us…
@klezman @ScottW58
What’s in a week?
Besides seven days?
2018 Etude Pinot Gris and rainbow trout with sides
Chappellet Mountain Cuvee.
2017 Dow’s Port w/ some dark chocolate.
A very nice port, can’t wait for the '16s and '17s
age about 20 years…well, I guess I’ll have to wait.
@FritzCat Got a bunch of 2016 Ports for my first kid since that’s his birth year. These should be good for his 50th. I’d love to be able to share it with him then!
Happy Cinco de Mayo everybody.
Margaritas, of course.
Woodward Canyon Cabernet, 2009.
Ya know…a little time really helps a good wine.
2011 Giornata Vermentino
from w.w just over 9 years ago.
@rjquillin
What did you think? I still have one of those and a '12 as well.
@chipgreen
Other half of the Qupe 2018 Syrah
Gard 2019 rose
Pedroncelli 2018 Chardonnay signature selection
with a pork roast.
Cameron Hughes Lot 545,
2012 Coombsville, Napa Valley Cabernet.
Very rich, great mouthfeel, lots of fruit.
2010 Kendric Vineyards Pinot Noir
I need to figure out what I’m cooking, but I’m drinking 2016 I. Brand & Family Grenache Brosseau Vineyard
Another beer, a doppelbock, from Idyllwild in a crowler - that’s a growler-can.
Here’s a blast from the past
@kawichris650
Is this any good?
Should I clear it out of the cellar, if I can find it?
Or find it and drink it (them)?
@rjquillin
Still enjoyable, but I’d suggest drinking them if you can find/access them. Obviously YMMV, but I don’t think they will improve with any additional age.
Shiba Wichern 2018 Willamette Blanc. Auxerrois. Very good with lobster.
2018 Bedrock Gewurztraminer
A red TBD
sleep now
Rodenbach Gran Cru Sour Flanders Red @ Stackhouse
@bunnymasseuse prior consumed a Wet City Making Out w/ Blackberry & Blueberry, Downeast Cranberry Cider
NV Trader Joe’s Brut Rosé (2020 edition)
2014 Bonny Doon Le Cigare Blanc
@radiolysis About to pop one of the ‘20 TJs with Chinese food. It’s a decent pairing.
@hscottk I should label the outside of mine. I should have some 2017 and 2018 as well, but it’s a crapshoot since I can’t tell until I get the cork out.
@hscottk @radiolysis
Same with the Wellington Duke, but even the cork is clueless.
@radiolysis @rjquillin I don’t tend to age these, so all but one is a 20. I did label the 19 and plan to keep it for a while and see where it goes.
@hscottk @radiolysis @rjquillin I’ve quite liked the TJ’s Brut Rose 2-3 years after release. Didn’t intentionally age them, but we bought enough of them that it happened. They do add some complexity with a couple years in bottle.
Wet city making out with berries from 10/9/2020, Sour beer, tasting delish! 6%abv
Wet city Making out with Sour Gummies Sour (Last of the two I had)
The 2020 was offered on Garagiste today, so why not open an older one: 2017 Red Newt Cellars Kelby James Russell Dry Rosé
2019 Stolpman Syrah Para Maria de los Tecolotes
so far, at PnP, very meh.
@rjquillin hope it improves!
@bunnymasseuse me2
Sorry Chicky from Burley Oak, keeping it local to cheer on the C-A-P-S, CAPS CAPS CAPS! Thought a Downeast Cranberry Cider was too close to the enemy despite being red….
Sour Me Unicorn Farts-DuClaw Brewing (it seriously had edible glitter in the beer, and tasted like fruit loops?)
@bunnymasseuse
And you drank it?
@pseudogourmet98 I did, but I’m not a fan of the glitter, or beer that tastes of Fruit Loops.
A really nice find from SA of all places!
2013 Château Roc de Candale
slumming tonight after the Wellington yesterday/today
Finished the Bedrock Enz Heritage wine
On to a 2003 Ravenswood Bariccia Zinfandel. This is excellent.
