Pale, salmon color. The nose offers suggestions of watermelons, white nectarines, fresh raspberry, Mirabelle plums, and white flowers. Feels like summer in a glass. The palate is medium-bodied and polished, with a textural elegance alongside salted minerals and saline notes. Also, notes of blood orange and pink grapefruit. The bright, long finish is clean and thirst-quenching.
Hillside vineyard with perfect southern exposure (facing the majestic Pyrénées mountains) helps produce wines with characteristic freshness and elegance. The most crucial aspect is for Yannick to begin in the vineyard, farming the grapes specifically for rosé. On hot afternoons, the steady breeze from the West takes the bite out of the summer swelter, refreshing the vines. The temperature plunges when the sun sets. Cool nights help keep the acids firm, but the juiciness shows from the low-yielding Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Merlot vines.
Winemaking
Light skin contact maceration. Made using the traditional press method. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tank for 5 months on the lees with lees stirring to provide additional richness.
Story
Son of a Butcher Rosé is a little “brother” of our highly acclaimed SOB Red Blend. Incredible but true, Yannick Rousseau made this delicious Rosé in the South-West of France. It is the result of the selection of the best vineyard blocks of Tannat / Cabernet Franc / Merlot, precise winemaking, and meticulous yet creative blending. It is a combination of old World Character with New World Spirit.
Y. Rousseau Wines is a dream that began long ago in the South-West of France and continues to grow and evolve today. Yannick Rousseau, French native, founder and winemaker, followed his heart and passion for winemaking all the way to Napa Valley where he met his Texan-born wife, Susan. The two of them bring their combined entrepreneurial savvy to embrace the ebbs and flows of running a family winery with the legacy of their racines, hospitable style, and discriminating artisanship.
Yannick’s reputation has been made not by following in anyone’s particular footsteps but rather by taking what he has learned from great mavericks and integrating it into what he discovers to be true. His history of working with grape varietals from the Southwest of France is well known. Now, he carries forward his winemaking mission still embracing Colombard, Tannat and other favored varietals and blending them to create revived, and even edge-bending wines.

Lab Rat Report for 2022 vintage Son of a Butcher rosé
This wine comes in a clear bottle with a metal ROPP twist-off cap.
Strangely the bottle does not say what varietals it contains, instead opting for a bit of a tongue-in-cheek ‘50% old world character, 50% new world spirit’ on the back label.
Fortunately I see this has been listed on casemates before, and in the earlier discussion thread it was stated this wine is a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
The appearance of the wine in both the bottle and the glass is a bit unusual, more like a white wine with just the tiniest hint of the rosé blush. In some lighting situations it really does just look like a pinot blanc or chardonnnay.
On the nose is peach and maybe a bit of pear.
The taste is very much stonefruit with a hint of something flowery, but it does not come across as sweet as rosé’s usually seem to be (definitely on the dry side.)
This is not a wine to cellar as it is well into its drinking window at this point.
I am a big fan of some of the other Son of a Butcher wines (particularly their red blend that has the same photo image on the front of the bottle as this one) but I must say this one did not grab me, though it would pair well with a chicken dish.
Morning, Intentionally the color of this Rosé wine was kept light (pale salmon color, like many Provence Rosé you would find in Provence). When you make traditional Rosé with Tannat (read press Rosé), you have to be very careful not to press the Tannat too hard otherwise the color would become easily too dark.

And post that offer WE had a wee sip:
90 points. In this wine, subtle aromas of fresh roses and citrus fruit leads to a dry palate of pineapple, peach, lemon and fleshy green apple. Moderate acidity balances the juicy red fruit, heading to a refreshing, crisp finish.

This Rosé has retained its freshness and balance quite well. It is a surprise for me too. The Tannat in it is the component that helps this Rosé keep a beautiful life. I would say drink Now and until Thanksgiving.
I was fortunate enough to be selected as a “rat” once again. The color was a pale straw yellow, reminding me of a Viura from Rioja. On the nose, I got honeysuckle and melon. The palate was bright leading with citrus and finishing with a hint of fruit, peach? It had a nice acidity and freshness and held up with the moderately spicy tacos we cooked last night.
Overall, this is an uncomplicated yet pleasant rosé that drinks more like a chilled white.
@losthighwayz Oh mon Dieu! my goodness…zippy or zingy…what is the difference? as french winemaker, I look for balance but I sure do like Rosé dry and refreshing.
@yannickrousseau haha good point. Not sure there’s a difference. My preference is lip-smacking roses which is why I asked the question. Sounds like this might fit the bill

@nklb It is 60% Tannat, 30% Cab Franc, 10% Merlot
In for a sextet, mis the Musketeer.

The rosé was part of the mixed offers on 3/9/24 and 6/24/23 with additional rattage and comments by the winemaker.
@kaolis snuck his comment in as I was typing (and had a power glitch just after I entered).

@jermfish Thank you for your feedback. Always appreciated.
Can anyone comment on the acidity? Would you call it zippy or zingy? Thanks
